El Marqués de Pombal delimitó la región, con la ayuda de los jesuitas a quienes más tarde expulsaría, y clasificó todas las propiedades según su orientación, la naturaleza del suelo, la altitud del viñedo ... y además, detuvo el volumen de producción para cada propiedad. De esta manera el marqués de Pombal "creó" el vino de Porto, también lo defendió con puño de hierro para que todos los participantes respetasen las reglas claras pero a la vez,muy restrictivas. Fue en ese período cuando se construyó la primera Denominación de Origen del mundo. Es la historia y el genio de los hombres que nos dejan los grandes legados. El vino de Porto apareció cuando fue necesario encontrar una respuesta a los problemas de transportar vinos tintos desde Haut Douro a Porto, ya que la mayoría de los vinos no aguantaban el viaje. El secreto fué la adición de brandy durante el proceso de vinificación, tanto para los vinos blancos como para los tintos.
Regiones del vino.
Todo el país está dividido en 14 áreas de 'vino regional'. Los vinos de estas áreas han sido etiquetados durante años en Portugal como Vinho Regional. Ahora, la Unión Europea ha introducido nuevos títulos para esta categoría de vino: 'IG', que significa 'Indicación geográfica' o 'IGP' - 'Indicación geográfica protegida'. El vino de Porto se distingue de los vinos comunes por sus características particulares: una enorme diversidad de tipos donde sorprende una riqueza e intensidad de aromas incomparables, una persistencia muy elevada tanto de aroma como de sabor, un volumen alcohólico elevado (generalmente comprendido entre los 19 y los 22% vol.), una amplia gama de dulzores y gran diversidad de colores. Existe un conjunto de designaciones que hacen posible la identificación de los diferentes tipos de vino de Porto. El color de los diferentes tipos de vino de Porto puede variar entre el retinto y el dorado claro, siendo posible todos los tonos intermedios (tinto, tinto-dorado, dorado y dorado claro). Los vinos de Porto Blancos presentan tonos diversos (blanco pálido, blanco pajizo y blanco dorado), íntimamente relacionados con la tecnología de producción.
