Los orígenes.
En 1994, Pablo Eguzkiza y Telmo Rodríguez junto con un tercer enólogo elaboran un vino de Garnacho, de viejas viñas en vaso de Navarra. El vino se llamó Alma. Así arranca el proyecto, que en sus orígenes se llamara Compañía de Vinos de La Granja. Un nombre que era toda una declaración de intenciones: quedaba claro que la compañía haría más vinos y que había un homenaje a La Granja, la famosa fábrica de vidrios, testigo de una artesanía española excepcional, hoy casi desaparecida. Aunque el vino Navarro fue un éxito, la escalada de precios de la uva de los años 90, y la falta de compromiso de las cooperativas en donde se operó, obligó a la compañía a abandonar la zona para centrarse en otros proyectos. Rueda es la segunda zona explorada. Allí es donde nace el proyecto Basa. Entonces los vinos se exportaban en su totalidad. A medida que aparecieron otras marcas como Aran, Molino Real o Lanzaga, surge la necesidad de ampararlas bajo una misma etiqueta. La compañía está únicamente en manos de Pablo Eguzkiza y Telmo Rodriguez, que deciden llamarla "Compañía de vinos Telmo Rodriguez", ya que éste es conocido en el mundo del vino por ser uno de los instigadores de la viticultura española.
Variedades autóctonas.
Desde su nacimiento, el argumento fundamental de la Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez es la utilización únicamente de variedades autóctonas de zonas originales. Esta filosofía contrasta entonces con el boom de la implantación de variedades foráneas, prácticamente en todo el viñedo español. Otra de las iniciativas a las que el proyecto quiere prestar una atención especial, también desde sus orígenes, es a la recuperación de viñedos olvidados. Así surgen los proyectos de Málaga, con Molino Real, o Cebreros, con Pegaso. La falta de medios inicial obliga a centrarse en vinos sencillos de rápida comercialización. Los vinos elaborados en Navarra, Rueda, Alicante, Toro, Aragón, Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Valedorras y Cigales, permiten estudiar a fondo las variedades Tempranillo, Tinto fino, Tinta de toro, Garnacho, Monastrell, Mencía, Verdejo, Viura y Godello. Desde un principio estos vinos quieren ser reflejo de un paisaje basado, ante todo, en la buena uva y en las familias de viticultores excepcionales.
Los vinos.
Surgen vinos como Dehesa Gago, Basa, Gaba do Xil, Viña 105, Gago, Gazur, Almuvedre, LZ o MR, entre otros. La Compañía de vinos Telmo Rodriguez basa este trabajo en su gran intuición por detectar las mejores zonas, su capacidad de motivar a los mejores viticultores, su conocimiento del vino y por último su gran compenetración con la mejor distribución de los principales mercados del mundo. Al tiempo, la Compañía de Vinos ha ido desarrollando proyectos únicos para importadores o clientes especiales, como Marks & Spencer en Gran Bretaña. Fruto de estas colaboraciones aparecen marcas como Pago Real, Pérez Burton, Peña del Infierno o Lunaran, que intentan acercar a la gran distribución la notable evolución que ha sufrido la nueva viticultura española.
Los viñedos.
- Bodega Lanzaga: En 1998 volvieron a Rioja cargados de experiencia e ilusión. Querían redescubrir el gusto del Rioja, que para nosotros sólo podía estar ligado a los mejores lugares, de los diferentes pueblos que tuvieron una larga tradición vitícola.
- Ladeiras Do Xil: En 2002 empieza su trabajo ahí, tomando el testigo directamente de las familias de viticultores que llevaban generaciones podando y cavando viñedos imposibles para elaborar su vino de diario.
- Molino Real-Moutain Wines: A mediados de los 90, decidieron rescatar el que había sido sin duda el más importante de todos: el “Mountain Wine” de Málaga.
- Pegaso Viñas Viejas: Descubrieron la ladera de Arrebatacapas hace tiempo, en un viaje siguiendo la trashumancia por la cañada real. Les llamaron la atención las impresionantes cepas de garnacha, su poda y su suelo. Este extraordinario viñedo a la deriva no conocía ni enólogo ni ingeniero ni bodeguero; estaba huérfano. En 1999 empezó esa aventura.
- Gago Viticultores de Toro: Fueron parte del movimiento que redescubrió el viñedo de toro a finales de los años 90. Varias bodegas de diversas zonas decidieron trabajar de forma diferente esta tierra, que tuvo el mérito de preservar mucho viñedo viejo en los términos más interesantes de la región.
- Viñedos de Matallana: La fuerza del tinto fino les trajo al páramo de La Ribera. Quisieron entender, a nuestra manera, esta tierra. En lugar de seguir el curso del río, la atravesaron de norte a sur, desde Sotillo de la Ribera hasta Pardilla.

Descripción.
La región del Douro está situada en el nordeste de Portugal, en la cuenca hidrográfica del río Duero. Una zona protegida por montañas que le confieren características climáticas idóneas para el desarrollo de una importante industria vitivinícola que produce vinos que seducen y sorprenden en todo el mundo. Otros vinos portugueses reconocidos internacionalmente son los de Oporto. Los vinos tintos con Denominación de Origen Douro se elaboran a partir de uvas autóctonas, como la touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinta barroca y tinto cão. La gran mayoría de los vinos procede de la mezcla (coupage) de varios tipos de uvas, con una complejidad y riqueza sin igual. La uva touriga nacional utilizada para elaborar este excelente vino tinto se vendimia de cepas viejas con más de 80 años de antigüedad. De profundo color rojo oscuro con ribetes violáceos, tiene aroma a cerezas muy maduras y ciruelas, a chocolate negro y a especias, como el clavo y la vainilla, con fuertes toques minerales. En la boca es carnoso, casi se puede masticar, con un recorrido por el paladar largo, untuoso y persistente. Un vino que deja huella.
Carácter Douro.
Al otro lado de la frontera, el Duero se llama Douro. Un cambio de nombre que da lugar a un paisaje majestuoso y a una enorme variedad enológica donde los Oportos son los reyes, y su corte, tintos y blancos que el consumidor empieza a apreciar. Los vinos tranquilos lusitanos, hermanos de los célebres y casi aristocráticos oportos, demuestran, con pocos años de vida, un nivel de calidad que los situa entre los primeros puestos del ranking. Mientras tanto, los legendarios oportos han continuado manteniendo su lugar entre la élite enológica, sostenidos por el arte de las mezclas y un más que trabajado marketing, al que apoya, en un discreto segundo plano, un emergente enoturismo que quiere revitalizar el lugar del cual proceden: el majestuoso paisaje de viñedos que bordea el territorio del río. Sin embargo, a pesar de que su carácter, marcado por la corriente fluvial, encuentra muchas similitudes con el resto de vinos del Duero (riberas, toros…), lo cierto es que estos productos continúan siendo casi desconocidos en España.
Los Douros blancos.
El esfuerzo realizado alrededor de los tintos no ha impedido el desarrollo en la región de unos blancos que están empezando a encontrar su sitio dentro del panorama de los vinos tranquilos portugueses. Se elaboran con variedades autóctonas (una apuesta que ha dotado a la región de una singularidad de la cual presume justificadamente), entre las que predominan la rabigato, la viosinho, la arinto, la malvasía, la moscatel y la confusa gouveio, confusa porque se puede encontrar con el nombre de verdelho, a pesar de que no es la misma que su sinónima de Madeira, y tampoco tiene nada que ver con la verdejo tan utilizada en España. Es precisamente esa frescura uno de los puntos comunes que tienen muchos vinos blancos de la región, aportada en parte por la tierra plagada de “xisto” o pizarra. La calidez de la zona (más de 40 grados en verano), que juega en su contra, provoca que los vinos no realicen la fermentación maloláctica.
Los Oportos.
En la misma región, donde nacen para ser envejecidos después en Vilanova de Gaia, los oportos mantienen el tipo de elegancia, complejidad y estilo propios de cada casa. Algunos elaboradores, y el propio IVDP, apuestan por reforzar el enoturismo en la ciudad y en el valle como una herramienta fortísima de conocimiento y difusión de estos vinos, no demasiado fáciles de entender para el inexperto. Y de paso, van rompiendo unos tópicos de consumo que pondrían los pelos de punta a elaboradores de vinos generosos en otras partes del mundo.
