Historia.

En el siglo XII, los monjes de la orden del Cister que habitaban la abadía de Santa María de Poblet, sumados a los caballeros templarios afincados en Barberà, transmitieron sus conocimientos vitivinícolas a los agricultores de la zona que consiguieron cultivar la viña de manera provechosa y extraer de sus uvas unos excelentes caldos. En el siglo XVIII, los rendimientos económicos que suponen la exportación de vino con destino Europa y América, los agricultores de la comarca se inclinan casi exclusivamente por el cultivo de las viñas. Se construyen márgenes y bancadas para conseguir la máxima cantidad de suelo cultivable, así como la línea ferroviaria Reus-Montblanc para trasladar los vinos de la Conca de Barberà los puertos del litoral tarraconense. El siglo XIX, después de la plaga de filoxera, que acabaría con la época de esplendor de la elaboración de vino, los agricultores de la comarca se agrupan en cooperativas vinculadas a la producción de vino. La Conca de Barberà es pionera en España en la agrupación de productores en cooperativas vitivinícolas, fundando en 1894 un sindicato para hacer una elaboración común de los vinos. Es entonces cuando Joan Esplugas, un propietario que conoció en un viaje a Francia los sistemas de lucha contra la filoxera, lidera la replantación de las viñas en la comarca. En el siglo XX el abogado y periodista Joan Poblet y Teixidó, desde las páginas de los semanarios de la época, promueve el asociacionismo de los agricultores. Destaca también la figura del abogado Albert Talavera, impulsor de la mancomunidad de las cooperativas de la comarca en una federación de cooperativas. En 1903 se construye la bodega cooperativa en el pueblo de Barberà, considerado el primer edificio de nueva planta de todo el Estado.

El consejo regulador.

El primer reglamento de la Denominación de Origen Conca de Barberà fue aprobado, por la Orden de 19 de noviembre de 1985 del Departamento de Agricultura, Ganadería y Pesca de la Generalitat de Catalunya, el cual fue posteriormente modificado por la Orden de 29 de septiembre de 1989. El Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación ratificó este reglamento, a efectos de su defensa por parte de la Administración Central del Estado en los ámbitos nacional e internacional, por la Orden de 14 de diciembre de 1989. La misión del Consejo Regulador de la D.O. Conca de Barberà es controlar la producción de uva y la elaboración de los vinos, impulsar la comercialización para garantizar la buena calidad de los vinos, defender los intereses de todas las bodegas que forman parte de la D.O. y promocionar los vinos pertenecientes a la D.O. Conca de Barberà. La D.O. Conca de Barberà cuenta con una extensión de 3.800 ha de viñedo y una producción media de 150.000 hl de vino.

Clima de la DO Conca de Barberà.

Las viñas amparadas por la denominación de origen se extienden por el territorio que integran los siguientes términos municipales: Barberà de la Conca, Blancafort, Conesa, Espluga de Francolí, Forès, Montblanc, Pira, Rocafort de Queralt, Sarral, Senan, Solivella, Vallclara, Vilaverd y Vimbodí. En general podemos hablar de un clima mediterráneo de transición entre la suavidad de las comarcas tarraconenses del litoral, dada la relativa proximidad al mar, y la continentalidad propia de las comarcas leridanas. La modesta altitud de la sierra de Miramar y el estrecho de la Riba permiten una cierta influencia de los vientos húmedos y templados de la costa, pero, por otra parte, las marcadas inversiones térmicas invernales acentúan las heladas en las partes bajas. Todo ello hace que exista un diferencial térmico notable entre el día y la noche, con unos inviernos fríos y unos veranos no demasiado calurosos. Sin embargo, la acción combinada del relieve y la altitud contribuyen a la aparición de microclimas con notables particularidades. La zona de producción vitícola se concentra básicamente en la región que debe su formación geológica a la acción erosiva del río Francolí y de su afluente, el Anguera. La acción combinada de estos dos ríos a lo largo de los milenios ha configurado la fisonomía de esta parte de la comarca, como la de un valle fluvial rodeado de cadenas montañosas: al este, las sierras de Miramar y del Cogulló; al oeste, las sierras del Tallat y de Vilobí; al norte, las sierras de Montclar, Membrillo y Comalats; y al sur, las montañas de Prades. Los suelos son, en su gran mayoría, de naturaleza calcárea y pobres en contenido de materia orgánica. Pueden ser arcillosos, con un característico color rojizo o de una textura más ligera y coloración parda. Al fondo de la cuenca hay terrazas fluviales. En el extremo suroeste de la comarca y en la falda de las montañas de Prades, también están presentes los suelos de pizarra.

Variedades de uva reconocidas.

Las uvas tintas que se cultivan en la D.O. Conca de Barberà, y que están reconocidas y aprobadas para la elaboración de vinos son la variedad ull de llebre, syrah, smoll negre, pinot noir, monestrell, merlot, garnacha negra, el trepat y cabernet sauvignon. Las variedades blancas admintidas son xenin, sumoll blanc, parellada, moscatel de grano menudo, macabeo, garnacha blanca y chardonnay. En esta D.O. se produce mayoritariamente vino blanco, aunque también lo hay rosado, tinto y espumoso. Sus vinos son frescos, de graduación alcohólica moderada, ligeros y de aroma afrutado. El hecho de que los viñedos se encuentren, mayoritariamente, en altitudes comprendidas entre los 350 y 600 m, da como resultado unos vinos de carácter fresco y ligero, con una gran expresión aromática.

Los vinos.

Buena parte de los vinos producidos en la Cuenca son blancos y rosados, destinados a la obtención de espumosos con Denominación Cava. Sin embargo, nos encontramos en una zona con unas condiciones privilegiadas para la elaboración de unos vinos tranquilos, en especial los tintos, excelentes. Viticultores y enólogos, conocedores de este potencial, están coordinando esfuerzos para obtener vinos de alta calidad y, poco a poco, va creciendo la producción. Las variedades tradicionales productoras de vino blanco son el macabeo y la parellada, con las que se obtienen unos vinos de color amarillo pálido brillante, ligeros, de fino aroma afrutado y moderada graduación alcohólica. El chardonnay es una variedad de introducción reciente, que puede participar en un coupage con las dos variedades anteriores, aportando cuerpo y consistencia, o bien destinarse a una elaboración de monovarietales con las técnicas más modernas de fermentación y / o crianza en barricas de roble, y originar unos vinos de reconocido prestigio. El vino rosado más característico de la denominación de origen proviene de la uva tinta Trepat, variedad autóctona de la Conca de Barberà. Es un vino destacable, ligero, fresco y afrutado, de color rosa-frambuesa, limpio y luminoso. Los vinos tintos proceden tradicionalmente del tempranillo y la garnacha.
