Español [ ES ]De los primeros pasos a la actualidad.
Aún siendo reciente la aparición de este pequeño, en dimensión proyecto, su andadura comienza hace muchos años; se sabe que el bisabuelo de la actual generación que trabaja hoy la propiedad la propiedad plantó en el año 1912 la más vieja viña que hoy trabajan, FINCA EL TORNO, 2.000 m2 dedicados desde hace 100 años al cultivo de la variedad albariño ubicada en el pueblo de Meaño, de aquí partiendo de la autorregulación que consigue la cepa fruto de la edad se vinifican junto a esta otras parcelas plantadas por las dos generaciones que ahora conviven en la bodega(por un lado José Manuel Méndez Lázaro y el hijo Rodrigo Méndez Arosa). Junto al abuelo y el padre el afamado viticultor y cosechero D. Francisco Méndez Laredo que entre muchas cosas formó parte de la gestora cuando la zona consiguió la D.O. en los 80. Era entonces cuando D. Francisco tenía su pequeña bodega de cosechero en Meaño y consiguió numerosos reconocimientos de sus caldos. D. Francisco Méndez fallece en 2.001 sin antes contar su sueño a los que hoy son sus hijos y nieto, el cuál era elaborar tintos de las fincas que había plantado 20 años antes. Hoy probablemente más de 100 años después de que esta familia comenzara el cultivo de la vid las generaciones actuales quieren recoger el legado familiar y cumplir algunos de sus sueños que se quedaron en el candilero para intentar hacerlos realidad, con el mayor rigor de lo que fue la herencia familiar en cuanto respecta al conocimiento que da generación tras generación el trabajo de la viña y elaboración de uva aunque de momento haya sido de forma discreta. Desde 2005 trabajando con el rigor y la discreción que hemos tenido siempre y con la colaboración impagable del enólogo berciano Raúl Pérez, nos hemos atrevido a moldear la uva que tantos años hemos visto crecer y conseguir nuestros vinos actuales y así realizar una parte del sueño que siempre nos ocupó. Actualmente estamos gestionando alrededor de 3,5 hectáreas de viñedo en propiedad y 3 hectáreas en alquiler repartidas en varias parcelas situadas en distintos puntos del municipio de Meaño, Sanxenxo y Barro.
Rodri Méndez y Raúl Pérez.
El proyecto de Rodrigo “Rodri” Méndez en el valle del Salnés ha sido una de las principales fuentes de inspiración en Rías Baixas desde su creación a mediados de los 2000. Rodrigo es sobrino de otro notable productor de albariño, Gerardo Méndez de Do Ferreiro, y el nombre que eligió para su proyecto, Forjas del Salnés, hace honor al negocio de hierros del abuelo Francisco Méndez, un gran apasionado de la viña que plantó numerosas fincas en la zona no solo con variedades blancas sino también con uvas tintas autóctonas. Movido por el deseo de elaborar tintos en una región de blancos, Rodri Méndez buscó la ayuda de Raúl Pérez, productor clave en Bierzo y en otras regiones gallegas, quien le animó a no dejar de lado los característicos albariños del Salnés. Raúl, de hecho, elabora en Forjas del Salnés su original albariño Sketch, una de las primeras crianzas submarinas realizadas en España. Ambos comparten también proyecto en Ribeira Sacra, en la zona de Chantada, bajo el nombre de Castro Candaz. En Forjas del Salnés se trabaja con 7,5 hectáreas de viñedo repartidas entre Meaño, Sanxenxo y Barro, cuatro de ellas en propiedad y el resto arrendadas. Una de estas últimas es una pequeña finca rural situada en Barro con cepas centenarias de albariño y caíño tinto de donde salen los fantásticos Finca Genoveva. El tinto está elaborado con raspón y se comercializa fuera de DO. Todas las parcelas se vinifican por separado para evaluar sus características en función de los suelos, la altitud o la mayor cercanía al mar. Aunque en algunos vinos se usa acero inoxidable, casi todas las elaboraciones se realizan en foudres de madera y barricas usadas de gran formato. En la albariño se buscan altas maduraciones en planta para reducir su alto contenido de málico. En tintos el estilo es casi borgoñón, con extracciones muy ligeras y apostando por la profundidad aromática y la persistencia. La producción total ronda las 45.000 botellas y hay por lo menos 15 etiquetas diferentes aunque no todas se elaboran todos los años. El vino de referencia de la bodega y una excelente tarjeta de presentación de su estilo es Leirana, un albariño vibrante y salino fermentado en acero inoxidable y sin maloláctica, a partir de una mezcla de viñedos de los distintos municipios en los que trabajan. Goliardo A Telleira, es un vino de parcela con carácter algo más maduro que el vibrante Finca Genoveva, mientras que Cos Pés, fermenta con pieles. Hay tres blancos que se producen ocasionalmente en función de las características de la añada: un Bastión de Luna blanco que procede de descartes de Leirana; el albariño con parada de fermentación y azúcar residual Leirana A Escusa; y el Leirana María Luisa Lázaro con los albariños de mayor acidez que se deja envejecer varios años en bodega antes de salir al mercado. Es un homenaje a la abuela de Rodri. Además del Finca Genoveva elaborado con caíño, la gama de tintos incluye Bastión de Luna, un coupage de caíño, loureiro y espadeiro que deja paso a tres monovarietales de estas tres mismas uvas, todos ellos comercializados bajo la marca Goliardo. La “rareza” en tinto es el pinot noir As Covas que se vende fuera de DO.
Proyecto independiente.
En 2011 nace un proyecto independiente bajo el nombre de Rodrigo Méndez que se inaugura con los albariños Cíes, elaborado solo con uvas de Meaño, y Sálvora, un blanco de parcela que procede de la finca con la que se hacía el antiguo Leirana Barrica. La segunda fase son vinos que proceden de una finca plantada por el propio Rodri en una zona alta y de monte, un viñedo de alta densidad en espaldera rodeado de eucaliptos en el que se cultivan las tintas caíño, espadeiro y loureiro, y las blancas albarín y caíño blanco. De aquí ha salido ya un caíño blanco, y pronto llegarán un albariño y un tinto de coupage. Bajo la misma razón social se comercializa el pinot noir que hace en el Bierzo con ayuda de Raúl Pérez bajo la marca El Barredo.
Rodrigo también nos anuncia un nuevo y minúsculo proyecto junto a un amigo de una finca que casi toca el mar: Se llamará O Raio do Vella (el "rayo de la vieja") e incluirá un blanco de albariño y un tinto de caíño con espadeiro con producciones de 500 y 300 botellas respectivamente y con vinos fuera de DO.
