La experiencia.

Lleva más de 20 años de experiencia en la elaboración y comercialización de vinos en Costers del Segre, Tomàs Cusiné inicia en 2003 su nuevo proyecto vitivinícola. Gran conocedor de la zona, pone en funcionamiento su empresa con una visión a largo plazo, con el objetivo de consolidarse como bodega de prestigio. Se instala en el pueblo de El Vilosell, en la comarca de Les Garrigues (Lleida), alquila la antigua cooperativa y la remodela, recuperando silos subterráneos e incorporando toda la infraestructura necesaria para obtener vinos elegantes y de gran calidad. En el 2006 inicia la ampliación de la bodega con 500 m2 destinados al almacenamiento y al embotellado. La bodega dispone de depósitos de cemento y depósitos de acero inoxidable con volúmenes que oscilan entre los 1.000 a los 10.000 L. Tomàs Cusiné busca índices de maduración en los que la carga fenólica y la acidez estén equilibradas. Refrigera la uva antes de pasarla por la mesa de selección y posteriormente realiza una premaceración en frío, seguida de una fermentación lenta a baja temperatura, para preservar la riqueza en fruta y el frescor de la cosecha. Para la fermentación maloláctica y para la crianza de los vinos utiliza barricas de roble francés de grano fino de 225 L de diferentes toneleros como François Frères, Nadalie, Seguin Moreau, Demptos, Sylvain.




Proyecto y bodega.

La bodega que lleva su nombre es el primer proyecto independiente que puso en marcha, una vez adquirida cierta experiencia en las bodegas, entonces familiares, Castell del Remei y Cérvoles. Fue en 2003 cuando emprendió esta aventura estableciéndome en la comarca de Les Garrigues. Su objetivo era elaborar vinos con carácter que reflejaran la expresión del territorio, implementando mi propia filosofía vinícola y sacando partido al conocimiento acumulado sobre la D.O. Costers del Segre. Unos años más tarde, se dedicó a consolidar su estilo basado en priorizar el trabajo en la viña y en la enología de precisión, que se nutren del esfuerzo y de la pasión. Si se me permite, quiero seguir manteniendo e incrementando el prestigio de mis vinos.




Historia de un empresario.

El empresario vitivinicultor Tomàs Cusiné Barber (1962) es propietario de las bodegas Tomàs Cusiné, Castell del Remei, Cérvoles Celler y Cara Nord. En 1985 se inició como elaborador en la bodega entonces familiar Castell del Remei, empresa con la que, buscando terruño y viñedos de montaña, en 1997 adquiere Cérvoles Celler. En la misma zona, en 2003 decide emprender su proyecto más personal, que se convierte en la bodega de autor que lleva su nombre, en el pueblo de El Vilosell. Experto en la D.O. Costers del Segre, traspasa los límites de la demarcación creando Cara Nord Celler (D.O. Conca de Barberà) y elaborando el vino Mineral (D.O. Montsant). Actualmente, elabora en las denominaciones de origen Costers del Segre, Conca de Barberà, Montsant. Su tarea de enólogo delata su maestría en el ensamblaje de vino, por lo que se le reconoce como uno de los mayores expertos en la materia. Tiene una experiencia de más de 30 vendimias. Tomàs Cusiné lidera uno de los grupos bodegueros más genuinos del país, con una producción total de 1.200.00 botellas, aproximadamente, el 50 por ciento de las cuales se exporta a más de 40 países de los cinco continentes. Sus vinos tienen el reconocimiento de prescriptores, sumilleres, críticos, guías enológicas y publicaciones especializadas.

Historia.

El área geográfica que comprende la actual Denominación de Origen Costers del Segre lleva siglos elaborando vinos, pero su ubicación interior y alejado del mar, dificultaban su inclusión en las vías de comercialización, pero obteniendo unos vinos con elementos propios y característicos. Innovaciones en las variedades de uva y en los métodos de producción, fue el primer lugar de Cataluña en introducir las variedades cabernet sauvignon, merlot y chardonnay, junto a las variedades autóctonas, y se adoptaron las técnicas californianas de vinificación. Durante el año 1983: Jaume Siurana, director del Incavi, y Manuel Raventós Artes, director general de Codorniu y de la Bodega Raimat, consideraron que, la excelente calidad vitivinícola de las comarcas ilerdenses precisaba de un consejo regulador, para velar por su tradición vitivinícola y garantizar la excelente calidad de los vinos producidos y liderar la promoción de sus vinos, aprovechando el gran éxito que ya tenían los vinos de Raimat, constituyéndose como D.O. en mayo de 1986 y siendo ratificada dos años después.




Geografía, geología y clima.

Costers del Segre es una región vitivinícola española, situada en la provincia de Lérida, que se ha constituido en denominación de origen. La Denominación de Origen Costers del Segre es un mosaico formado por siete territorios, repartidos a lo largo de toda la cuenca del río Segre y el Pirineo leridano, con el objetivo de agrupar y dotar de entidad propia la vitivinicultura de la provincia de Lérida. Abarca sietes subzonas de producción: Segriá, Raimat, Artesa de Segre, Urgell, Pallars, Vall de Riucorb y Garrigues. Cada una de estas regiones tiene condiciones geográficas y climáticas diversas, alternando zonas de montaña con otras de llanura, cuyo nexo de unión es la cuenca media del río Segre, entre el Pirineo y el Ebro, y el clima interior y seco, alejado de la influencia del mar y con muchas horas de sol, pocas lluvias, pero de elevada humedad debido a las numerosas nieblas invernales. En general, goza de clima continental, con contrastes térmicos, alta insolación y pluviosidad escasa. Las altitudes varían entre los 200 y los 1.100 metros de altitud. Edafológicamente hablando, nos encontramos con terrenos calcáreos cubiertos parcialmente de arena, con una gran uniformidad en toda la denominación. La temperatura media anual es de 14 °C a 15 °C, siendo frecuentes heladas en invierno y temperaturas de hasta 35 °C en verano.




Los vinos.

Los vinos con el sello D.O. Costers del Segre pueden ser tanto blancos como rosados, tintos o espumosos, así como vinos de aguja y vinos de licor. Dependiendo del grado de envejecimiento, los vinos elaborados se clasifican en jóvenes, crianza, reserva y gran reserva. En el conjunto de esta Denominación de Origen las variedades blancas predominantes son las tradicionales, Macabeo y Parellada. Esto hace que los blancos de la región de Costers del Segre sean vinos de perfil más clásico, es decir, ligeros, afrutados y acidulados. La exitosa aclimatación del Chardonnay a la región ha abierto la puerta a vinos de características más modernas, ya sean vinos jóvenes o fermentados en barrica de roble, porque presentan una mayor estructura y se hace más presente su carácter varietal. Entre las variedades tintas predominan el Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah y Pinot Noir, pero también se cultivan las variedades tradicionales, sobretodo el Tempranillo, la Garnacha y el Trepat. Dentro de los matices lógicos que el suelo de cada territorio imprime en sus uvas, los tintos de la DO Costers del Segre se caracterizan porque tienen un aroma potente y un gusto equilibrado, al mismo tiempo que ofrecen una buena expresión tánica y en boca resultan sabrosos, amplios y estructurados.

Origen.

La variedad cariñena es una uva originaria de la zona de Aragón de donde toma su nombre, concretamente de la comarca homónima ubicada en la provincia de Zaragoza. Aunque hay algunas dudas sobre su relación, también es conocida como mazuelo en la denominación de origen Rioja. En Cataluña recibe el nombre de samsó. Los primeros escritores de libros de vinos de Italia especularon que la cariñena, conocida como carignano en algunas partes de Italia, era una vid fenicia que fue introducida en Cerdeña por los fenicios en el siglo IX a. C. Creían que esa uva se había extendido a otras colonias fenicias partiendo de ahí, llegando al asentamiento de Sulces, donde eventualmente fue traída a la península itálica y, desde ahí, los antiguos romanos la llevaron a las regiones del Mediterráneo Occidental. Hoy, la mayoría de los ampelógrafos ha descartado esta teoría debido a la falta de documentación histórica y evidencias de ADN que sugieran que la uva tiene un origen fenicio o italiano. En lugar de eso, la evidencia apunta de forma más evidente a un origen español de la uva. La uva cariñena es también conocida como mazuela, mazuelo, samsó, caranyana, crinyana, granyena, caragnane o carignan.




Características.

Las cepas de cariñena son vigorosas, de entrenudos cortos y, por ello, con mucha densidad de hojas, de porte erguido, de elevada fertilidad y con muy buenos rendimientos. Su desborre es tardío y madura en media estación tendiendo a tardía, siendo de las últimas variedades de uva que se cosechan en la vendimia, por lo que, salvo que esté plantada en suelos muy cálidos, no suele alcanzar la madurez completa para su vendimia. Los racimos son grandes, compactos, con hombros marcados y pedúnculos muy cortos, uniformes en el tamaño de las uvas, pero heterogéneos en su color. Las uvas son grandes, de epidermis con enverado y evolución del color irregular y color azul negro con mucha pruina. A pesar de tener un hollejo no demasiado grueso, sí tiene una elevada resistencia a heridas y al agrietado. La pulpa no tiene pigmentación, tiene bastante consistencia, aunque es blanda y jugosa. Es una variedad con elevada sensibilidad a la yesca y al oídio, lo que puede causar grandes pérdidas por ataques tardíos a los racimos. Es sensible a la polilla de racimo, aunque no suele tener problemas de ataques, asimismo es bastante sensible a los ácaros. Tiene una sensibilidad media al mildiu y a la botritis y escasa a la excoriosis y a la eutipiosis. No suele tener problemas de corrimiento de racimo, tolera bastante bien las sequías y tampoco sufre daños con el viento. No requiere de niveles altos de fósforo, nitrógeno ni magnesio, no así de potasio, ya que una carencia en este elemento provocaría oscurecimiento de la pulpa. Es una cepa que se adapta bastante bien a cualquier tipo de suelo, aunque los mejores resultados se obtienen con suelos pedregosos, ya sean aluviales o esquistosos, pero en ningún caso encharcados o saturados de humedad. Se recomiendan las podas cortas y no efectuar despuntes.




Zonas de cultivo.

Como su nombre indica, la uva cariñena es la más característica de los vinos de su DO homónima, Cariñena. También se elaboran vinos con esta variedad, aunque sea conocida como mazuelo, en la D.O.C. Rioja. Otras zonas productoras que producen caldos con esta uva son las D.O. de Priorato, Mointsant o Tarragona. Fuera de España también es una uva muy cultivada, se pueden encontrar viñedos de cariñena en países muy variados, como es el caso de Francia, Chile, México, Sudáfrica o Estados Unidos e incluso en China.




Vinos.

La variedad cariñena da lugar a mostos con alto contenido en azúcar y bastante color, con elevado contenido en taninos astringentes y con aromas amargos y herbáceos dando vinos jóvenes de color muy vivo con aromas florales, predominando las violetas, pero que poseen poca estabilidad aromática en su evolución. Por su alto contenido en azúcar es base de vinos alcohólicos, bien cubiertos de capa y con buenos aromas en vinos jóvenes, así como con una acidez elevada. Los vinos procedentes de cepas viejas pueden ser excelentes, con un alto nivel de taninos por lo que envejece bien y da vinos con cuerpo.
