Un reformista.

Bodegas Palacio forma parte del limitado y selecto club de Bodegas Centenarias en la D.O. Ca. Rioja. Fundada en 1894 su afán de superación y liderazgo le ha llevado a convertirse en un referente en Rioja, o elaborando una amplia gama de vinos, con una acusada personalidad y posicionamiento diferenciado, avalados por numerosos premios en los principales concursos y revistas del sector. Bodegas Palacio es una de las firmas con más historia de Rioja Alavesa y una de las que mejor ha sabido adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos. Fue fundada en 1894 por Cosme Palacio y Bermejillo, un conocido empresario y político bilbaíno que llegó a ser diputado provincial y presidente de la Cámara de Comercio de la capital vizcaína, y sin pretenderlo, revolucionó totalmente el sector del vino riojano. Después de estudiar enología en Montpellier y de la mano del enólogo Domingo Garramiola, Cosme Palacio viajó a Valbuena de Duero para seguir experimentando.




El regreso.

Años después, Cosme Palacio volvió a Rioja dispuesto a aplicar las técnicas de elaboración bordelesas que había aprendido en Francia, mientras que Domingo se quedó en tierras vallisoletanas para hacerse cargo de una de las bodegas con más potencial de la zona: Vega Sicilia. Durante la década de los ochenta, Bodegas Palacio decidió llevar a cabo un proceso de modernización enológica de la mano del que ya era uno de los mejores enólogos del mundo: Michel Rolland. El francés fue el artífice de la creación de un nuevo tinto bautizado como el fundador de la bodega, Cosme Palacio, que se convirtió en el primer vino de autor que se elaboraba en Rioja y en un abanderado de los llamados tintos de "alta expresión". La adquisición de la firma por parte del potente grupo Hijos de Antonio Barceló en 1998 convirtió a Bodegas Palacio en una de las empresas más modernas del vino riojano.




Bodegas.

En pleno corazón de la Rioja Alavesa, en Laguardia, una villa medieval amurallada con gran valor histórico, se encuentra Bodegas Palacio, rodeada de viñedos y con una ubicación privilegiada para el cultivo de la vid. Junto a ella, se encuentra la antigua Bodega donde hace más de 100 años Don Cosme Palacio comenzó a elaborar sus vinos, y que hoy se ha convertido en un pequeño y acogedor hotel. La calidad de los vinos de la zona donde está Bodegas Palacio se debe, en gran medida a las uvas que se desarrollan en los suelos arcillo-calcáreos de la Rioja Alavesa, suelos ideales para que las cepas regulen su demanda de humedad. La ubicación de los viñedos con orientación sur y protegidos de los vientos fríos del Norte por la Sierra de Cantabria, permite que la cepa aproveche el calor que necesita para la maduración del fruto. Los vinos.

Los vinos blancos se elaboran a partir de las variedades blancas, preferentes: Godello, Loureira, Treixadura, Dona Branca, Albariño, Torrontes y Lado. Autorizada: Palomino. Los vinos tintos se elaboran con con uvas tintas preferentemente como la Mencía, Tempranillo, Brancellao, Merenzao, Sousón, Caíño Tinto, Espadeiro e Ferrón o bien las autorizadas: Gran Negro, Garnacha Tintureira y Mouratón. los vinos espumosos son vinos que se han obtenido según el método tradicional, elaborado con un mínimo del 85% de uva de la variedad godello. El vino tostado es un vino naturalmente dulce, elaborado a partir de las variedades tintas o de Godello. Todos estos vinos se elaboran con uva procedente de parcelas con limitación de producción y la crianza de los mismos, es en barricas de roble, dando lugar a tres variantes como son barrica, crianza y gran reserva.




La denominación de Origen.

Valdeorras es una de las cinco Denominaciones de Origen de Galicia. Abarca las superficies vitícolas de los municipios de A Rúa, A Veiga, Carballeda de Valdeorras, Larouco, O Barco, O Bolo, Petín, Rubiá y Vilamartín​ y sus vinos contienen esencia propia gracias a las características físicas comunes que posee. Se caracteriza por un clima mediterráneo-oceánico, con inviernos fríos y veranos cálidos y otoños y primaveras suaves. Es ideal para vinos secos de primera calidad con un óptimo por encima de los 450 m. de altitud, siendo Valdeorras privilegiada al situarse toda la comarca entre los 300m y los 700m de Altitud, y estando así toda ella en la Zona I de Winkler. Además, Valdeorras presenta una gran diversidad de suelos para la superficie de viñedo inscrita que posee: 1.300 hectáreas. El río Sil atraviesa la comarca de este a oeste, originando un valle con marcado carácter asimétrico: laderas con mucha pendiente en su margen izquierdo y más suaves en el derecho, esencialmente, en los municipios de O Barco, A Rúa y Vilamartín. Otros ríos menos caudalosos como el Xares, Bibei, Cigüeño y Casaio, en las tierras de O Bolo, Larouco, Rubiá y Carballeda, no llegan a formar valles pero sí proporcionan laderas donde se cultiva el viñedo, pudiendo observarse bancales en pendientes del Bibei y Xares. Estos suelos de exposición sur, siempre han sido considerados de vocación vitícola, al proporcionar menos fertilidad y buen drenaje, lo que garantiza un rendimiento más moderado y con uvas de maduración adecuada.​.




Historia de los vinos.

Los vinos de Valdeorras encuentran su origen en la época romana. Fue en estos años cuando se empezó a plantar viñedo y construir lagares en la zona que crearon una cultura secular en la atención de la viña y la elaboración de vinos. Una cultura que también se ha visto influenciada por la llegada de los grandes monasterios de la mano de la cristianización. Años estos que vinieron seguidos por un arduo camino que, finalmente, dio lugar al reconocimiento de la Denominación de Origen Valdeorras por Orden Ministerial en 1945. Los objetivos de esta entidad se dividen en dos ejes complementarios: por un lado, se busca la recuperación de variedades autóctonas como el Godello y el Mencía y, por el otro, se trata de apostar por la calidad, impulsar el control, facilitar la promoción y buscar nuevos caminos de expansión y comercialización. ​Tras años de esfuerzo investigador, de implantación de nuevas tecnologías y la modernización del proceso de producción, Valdeorras ha logrado que sus vinos estén entre los mejores de España y se exporten a los cinco continentes.​ Actualmente, la labor vinícola de Valdeorras y el complejo mundo a su alrededor se organiza a través del Consejo Regulador, órgano que rige los destinos de la Denominación de Origen, abarcando las superficies vitícolas de los municipios de A Rúa, A Veiga, Carballeda de Valdeorras, Larouco, O Barco, O Bolo, Petín, Rubiá y Vilamartín con casi 50 bodegas.​​ Exceptuando A Veiga, todos disponen de explotaciones vitícolas que dotan al territorio de una singularidad única. Origen.

El origen de la mencía se pierde en la historia, siendo una de las uvas más antiguas de la península ibérica, siendo introducida, con toda probabilidad, por las legiones romanas asentadas en el noroeste de Hispania pues, hace más de 2.000 años, escritos de Plinio el Viejo y Estrabón ya hacían referencia a las viñas de uva mencía en el Bierzo y Valdeorras. Ya desde tiempos remotos, las zonas donde hoy reina la mencía se destacaban por el ir y venir de legiones romanas, que plantaron las primeras vides y construyeron lagares, siendo desde entonces zonas de gran tradición vitivinícola. Por la Vía Romana se supone que se trasladaba el vino producido en algunas de esas tierras a la Roma Imperial, para disfrute de los emperadores. Al declinar el imperio, también lo hicieron las viñas. Siglos después, llegó su expansión con el desarrollo de monasterios medievales, lugares donde el vino era imprescindible en el culto, pero también lo era en la vida cotidiana de los monjes, pues formaba parte esencial de su alimentación. Fueron los monjes de aquella época los que desarrollaron nuevas técnicas de cultivo y elaboración. Además de los monasterios, el auge del camino de Santiago hizo que las viñas se extendieran por sus alrededores y cobraran una especial importancia. El vino de mencía fue tan valorado en la zona de Valdeorras que llegó a ser utilizado como moneda de cambio, para satisfacer impuestos y también para dar gracias a los santos como pago de milagros. Cuando en el siglo XIX llegó la filoxera, los viñedos fueron desapareciendo siendo sustituidos paulatinamente por gramíneas. A mediados del siglo XX, un grupo de viticultores relanzó los viñedos de mencía. Los años ochenta supusieron el inicio de una nueva era, lo que ha dado lugar a que actualmente se puedan degustar grandes vinos elaborados con esta variedad. Los romanos la introdujeron, los monjes la mejoraron y la filoxera casi consiguió acabar con ella, pero, afortunadamente, la mencía sigue dando buenos caldos para el deleite de los aficionados al vino.




Características.

La variedad mencía produce racimos pequeños y compactos, con bayas uniformes, tanto en tamaño como en color, pedúnculo de tamaño medio y poco lignificado. Las uvas tienen un tamaño entre pequeño y mediano, con forma elipsoidal, ligeramente puntiaguda. Su piel es gruesa, muy oscura azulada y con mucha pruina, es jugosa y bastante consistente sin llegar a ser dura. La mencía es sensible al oídio y al mildiu y a enfermedades de la madera. Su sensibilidad a la botritis no es demasiado alta ni su afectación por los ácaros. La planta no es muy productiva y, aunque presente una buena acidez de entrada, hay que estar muy pendientes a la hora de su vendimia, ya que cualquier alteración en el racimo puede disminuir su virtuosa frescura.




Zonas de cultivo.

La Mencía es la variedad de uva recomendada en las CC. AA. de Castilla y León, Asturias, Galicia, Castilla-La Mancha y Cantabria. De igual forma se es cultivada en la zona más septentrional de Portugal, de donde se cree que procede como resultado del cruce de las variedades Patorra y Alfrocheiro, uvas tintas de las regiones de Douro y Dão, respectivamente. La distribución de la Mencía se localiza en su mayor parte en El Bierzo y en el sureste de Galicia, donde están concentradas las denominaciones de origen de Monterrei, Valdeorras y Ribeira Sacra, siendo en las parcelas de esta última cultivada en bancada desde tiempos de la Antigua Roma.




Vinos.

No es una uva fácil de elaborar, pero bien trabajada da unos vinos de excepcional factura La mencía genera vinos de intenso color frambuesa, aromas intensos a frutas, pero también delicados a flores, buenas dosis alcohólicas, buena acidez y posibilidades de crianza. Aunque en algunas zonas como el Bierzo, la Ribeira Sacra o las Rías Baixas, hasta hace poco los tintos a base de mencía eran más bien vinos ligeros, prontos para beber, y de baja graduación alcohólica, poco a poco han ido transformándose, especialmente en el Bierzo y la Ribeira Sacra, en vinos que buscan sacar a flote toda su potencia, la expresividad del terruño, y la buena capacidad de envejecimiento que está demostrando tener la mencía, añadiendo crianzas en madera más prologandas. Esto está propiciando un renacer de esta cepa, que estudios recientes asemejan mucho con la Cabernet Franc, de ahí que algunos vinculen su origen con Burdeos. Los vinos de uva Mencía son vinos con cuerpo, de estructura medio-alta, con gran color y acidez. Su boca ofrece sensaciones aterciopeladas, llenas, sedosas. En nariz son muy afrutados, con aromas a frutas rojas, maduras, herbáceos, minerales.
