A finales del siglo XVIII, el bullicio de las calles de Jerez de la Frontera atestigua el dinamismo de la ciudad, que progresa gracias a la exportación de sus tan afamados vinos. La pujanza del negocio vinícola atrae a comerciantes de medio mundo pero es un español, Juan Sánchez de la Torre, quien en 1781 sienta las bases de la sociedad Sánchez Romate Hermanos, una de las pocas bodegas que sigue actualmente en manos de propietarios jerezanos. Además del reconocimiento del mercado a la calidad de sus vinos, Juan Sánchez de la Torre consigue pronto el aprecio de sus conciudadanos: El bodeguero es un hombre inquieto y culto, un verdadero hombre de su tiempo, la Ilustración, que brinda un apoyo decidido al progreso de la educación y las artes en Jerez.
Avances técnicos.
Con el tiempo, la bodega creció y se adaptó a los sucesivos avances técnicos manteniendo el respeto a la tradición elaboradora. Más de un siglo después de su fundación, la firma alcanza uno de sus principales hitos cuando en 1887 la cuarta generación de los Sánchez Romate decide crear un brandy exclusivo para la familia y los amigos más allegados. Nace así Cardenal Mendoza Solera Gran Reserva, el brandy insignia de la casa. Manteniendo hasta hoy la independencia, la historia de la bodega ha conocido otros episodios señalados. En 1909, por ejemplo, fue nombrada proveedora de la Cámara de los Lores del Reino Unido; poco más tarde, en 1917, alcanzó el título de proveedora del Sacro Palacio Apostólico del Vaticano. Hoy los vinos y brandies de Sánchez Romate mantienen una vocación internacional, con una decidida expansión por los cinco continentes.
