La viticultura ha existido en la zona que ocupa la D.O.C. Colli Orientali del Friuli desde la época de los romanos. En 1866, durante el Risorgimento, la región se unió con Italia, en los setenta los vinos blancos de la región comenzaron a recibir atención internacional debido a las innovaciones en las técnicas de vinificación que producían vinos blancos más frescos y vibrantes. Ya en los ochenta, los enólogos del Colli Orientali del Friuli se centraron en aumentar la calidad de su producción de vino tinto, y siguiendo los pasos de los productores "súper toscanos", los enólogos de Friuli decidieron producir vinos tintos fuera de las regulaciones del DOC bajo la designación de vino da tavola. Geografía y geología.
Colli Orientali del Friuli es una Denominación de Origen Controlada (DOC) ubicada en la región vinícola italiana de Friuli-Venecia Julia. La región está situada en la provincia de Udine y se subdivide en tres secciones principales; Ramandolo en el norte, Cialla al este y Corno di Rosazzo al sureste. El DOC Friuli Colli Orientali se extiende sobre un área que afecta a la totalidad o parte de diecinueve municipios en la parte central oriental de la provincia de Udine, cerca de la frontera con la República Eslovena. Los suelos del Colli Orientali consisten en una alternancia de capas de marga (arcillas calcáreas) y areniscas (arenas calcificadas). La producción de vino blanco del Colli Orientali del Friuli está dominada por la uva Friulano, que representa casi un tercio de las plantaciones de viñedos de la región. Otras variedades importantes de vino blanco incluyen Sauvignon blanc , Pinot grigio , Verduzzo , Pinot bianco y Ribolla Gialla . Las subáreas Pignolo di Rosazzo y Ribolla giallo di Rosazzo se encuentran en una pequeña área a caballo entre los municipios de Corno di Rosazzo , Manzano y San Giovanni al Natisone . Allí producen dos vinos de vides indígenas, respectivamente el Pignolo y el Ribolla amarillo. El pignolo representa el más aristocrático entre los vinos de la denominación, con una marcada propensión a una larga crianza. La concentración polifenólica y la de los taninos, junto con la alta concentración alcohólica, se unen en un todo que permite su durabilidad en el tiempo, alcanzando incluso diez años de vida con productos que aún se expresan en los niveles más altos. El Schioppettino di Prepotto incluye parte del municipio de Prepotto y se caracteriza por un solo vino que ha encontrado una de sus más altas expresiones en este municipio, para el que también se contempla el tipo de reserva. El Refosco de Faedis finalmente, es una sub-área caracterizada por la producción de la uva Refosco nostrano e incluye el municipio de Faedis y Torreano, Attimis, Nimis, Povoletto y Tarcento. También para este tipo, se proporciona la mención "reserva".
Notas de cata.
Los Colli Orientali del Friuli siempre han sido una tierra de vinos: desde la época romana hasta la del ducado lombardo. En la actualidad, fue en el Colli Orientali del Friuli donde nació la idea de los "Superwhites" de Friulian, una definición que se adapta bien a una denominación que incluye doce tipos de vinos blancos, diez de los cuales con indicación de variedad de uva más el "Blanco" y el "dulce". Origen.
La pinot gris es una variedad de uva, de la que se tienen noticias desde la Edad Media en la región de Borgoña, donde probablemente se la llamaba fromenteau. Llegó a Suiza desde Borgoña, junto a la pinot noir, a principios del siglo XIV. Según se cree, esta variedad era la favorita del Emperador Carlos IV de Luxemburgo, quien envió esquejes de esta vid, llevados por los monjes cistercienses, hasta Hungría. Los religiosos crearon viñedos de pinot gris en las laderas de Badacsony, a orillas del lago Balatón, en 1375. Poco después, la vid fue llamada szürkebarát, que significa "monje gris". En 1711, un comerciante alemán, de nombre Johann Seger Ruland, descubrió una uva creciendo silvestre en los campos del Palatinado. El subsiguiente vino que produjo fue conocido como ruländer y, posteriormente, se descubrió que esta vid era la pinot gris. Hasta los siglos XVIII y XIX, la uva era popular en Borgoña y en Champaña, pero las malas cosechas en la zona hicieron que decayera. En Alemania ocurrió algo similar, pero los viticultores de principios del siglo XX fueron capaces de desarrollar clones que producían cosechas más consistentes y fiables.
Características.
La variedad Pinot Gris es una uva originaria de Borgoña donde le llaman Pinot Beurots. Investigadores de la Universidad de California en Davis, han determinado que la pinot gris tiene un perfil de ADN similar a la pinot noir y que la diferencia de color deriva de una mutación genética que ocurrió hace siglos. Las hojas y las cepas de ambas vides son tan similares que la diferencia de color es lo único que permite diferenciarlas. Las cepas de pinot gris son de vigor medio bajo, de porte erecto, desborre y maduración semitardíos a tardios. Su producción es escasa. Los racimos son pequeños, compactos, homogéneos, cilíndricos, alados, con ramificación claramente diferenciada y muchas veces largamente pedunculada. Las bayas del pinot gris son pequeñas de sección circular y perfil ligeramente elíptico. Su hollejo es grueso de color gris-rosado-marrón, con mucha pruina. La pulpa es compacta, jugosa y muy aromática. Es una viña que resiste bien el frío, no se ve muy afectada por las heladas, tanto las de invierno como las de primavera. Resiste muy poco la caliza activa y la sequía. Es muy sensible a la botritis ya la podredumbre gris y ácida. Es sensible black-rot, al desecado del raquis, a los ácaros, cicadélidos y a la polilla del racimo, sin embargo, es poco sensible a la excoriosis.
Zonas de cultivo.
La variedad Pinot Gris se asocia generalmente a las regiones vitícolas de Alsacia (Francia) y Oregon (Estados Unidos).
