Respondiendo a las necesidades de un amplio sector de consumidores que demandan la más alta calidad en vinos blancos, Castillo de Maetierra lideró la creación, en 2003, un proyecto pionero en La Rioja como el de Valles de Sadacia. Muchas de las iniciativas de la bodega han sido revolucionarias, desde comenzar por un proyecto en La Rioja basado exclusivamente en blancos, hasta concebir una gama de blancos secos combinando Moscatel de Grano Menudo con otras variedades autóctonas de la zona como Viura y Malvasía, pasando por la introducción de una selección de las mejores variedades blancas foráneas, con el objetivo de recuperar la viticultura de los parajes con más historia de La Rioja. Cada uno de los pasos de la bodega, en un entorno poco acostumbrado a los cambios, ha sido precedido de incredulidad y seguido, posteriormente, de asombro. Todo ello, gracias a un equipo de grandes profesionales, altamente preparados y con un gran espíritu de superación.
Vendimia y Elaboración.
A manos de Castillo de Maetierra, el Moscatel de Grano Menudo, de maduración temprana, inaugura, año tras año, la vendimia en La Rioja. Las casi 81 hectáreas de variedades blancas, propiedad de la bodega, son vendimiadas progresivamente, empezando por las uvas destinadas a los vinos más secos y terminando por las de los dulces de vendimia tardía, allá por los últimos días de octubre y mediados de noviembre. La vendimia se realiza por la noche, entre las 2 de la madrugada y las 8, franja horaria durante la cual se dan las temperaturas más bajas. Este aspecto resulta fundamental para asegurar la máxima calidad de la uva y su llegada a bodega en perfectas condiciones. Una vez allí, se desechan los racimos que no reúnen un excelente estado sanitario. Durante la elaboración, la uva se deposita en los maceradores, donde se lleva a cabo la críomaceración, con lo que se logra extraer todo el potencial aromático y gustativo de la variedad Moscatel de Grano Menudo, la más aromática del mundo. La fermentación se desarrolla a bajas temperaturas, y difiere según el tipo de vino sea seco, con un desarrollo completo de la fermentación, semi-seco, en el que se detiene en su tramo final, o dulce, interrumpiéndose espontáneamente al alcanzar un determinado nivel de alcohol.
Los Vinos.
Castillo de Maetierra sigue avanzando en su ambicioso proyecto, creando únicamente vinos blancos exclusivos, innovadores y de prestigio. Los blancos de Castillo de Maetierra se caracterizan por ser vinos elegantes y delicados pero, a la vez, capaces de sorprender por su color, aroma y sabor, por lo que han sido descritos por numerosos críticos como grandes vinos blancos de Alta Expresión. Otra singularidad propia de los vinos secos de Castillo de Maetierra, es su larga vida. La combinación de las tres variedades (Moscatel de Grano Menudo, Viura y Malvasía) hace que su vida se alargue hasta el tercer año y su momento óptimo de consumo se produzca a partir del 5º mes después del embotellado, y dure hasta un año y medio más tarde. El énfasis por lograr la máxima calidad, a su vez, redunda en la elaboración de producciones cortas, como queda reflejado en las botellas mediante etiquetas numeradas. Poco a poco, el proyecto va consolidando una amplia gama de vinos, desde blancos secos, frescos y aromáticos, pasando por elegantes vinos blancos, suaves y afrutados, hasta deliciosos vinos dulces de vendimia tardía. Después de sorprender a críticos y restauradores, y ser premiados en numerosos certámenes internacionales, los blancos de Castillo de Maetierra se están afianzando en un puesto de privilegio, dentro de la élite del mercado mundial de vinos blanco.
El Castillo de Maetierra.
En tierras riojanas de la ribera del Ebro, a escasos pasos de la bimilenaria ciudad de Calahorra, y en la misma calzada del Camino de Santiago aragonés, se erige el Castillo de Maetierra. Más de 350 hectáreas conforman Maetierra, una explotación hortofrutícola, cuyo epicentro describen el castillo y la bodega, y en la que, laboriosamente, se cultivan todo tipo de productos de la tierra, muchos de ellos ecológicos. Un gran espectáculo de vida natural del que se puede disfrutar todo el año, siguiendo el ciclo vegetativo de cada uno de los cultivos. De este concepto de la tierra como generadora de vida (madre-tierra), conjuntamente con el vocablo de origen luso "mae" (madre), proviene el nombre de Maetierra.

Español [ ES ]Origen.
Esta uva, muy probablemente tiene su origen en Algaida, en el norte de África y su historia se remonta al reinado de Alfonso VI, Rey de León, entre los siglos XI y XII, cuando, tras la reconquista de Toledo, la zona del Duero fue repoblada por vascones, cántabros y mozárabes. Estos nuevos habitantes la plantaron en las zonas de Toro y Rueda. En el año 1980 se crea la Denominación de Origen Rueda, entre las provincias de Valladolid, Segovia y Ávila, que es la principal zona productora de vinos de uva verdejo.
Características.
Las variedad verdejo es el fruto de cepas semirrastreras, de porte postrado, vigor medio, poco fértiles y de producción elevada. De estas cepas se obtienen unas uvas de piel es fina, color verde amarillento y de tamaño entre pequeño y mediano, uniformes, esféricas, con hollejo de grosor medio y pepitas grandes. Posee una pulpa sin pigmento, jugosa pero insípida. Los racimos tienen un tamaño pequeño-mediano, son compactos y su pedúnculo es muy corto. Los viñedos de verdejo tienen una brotación media, maduración media-tardía y ciclo medio. Es una variedad con un amplio grado de adaptación por lo que tolera bien la sequía moderada y se adapta a suelos poco fértiles y pedregosos. Más cercana al Macabeo que al Chardonnay y Sauvignon Blanc en cuanto a rusticidad y productividad se refiere. Se le atribuyen problemas de corrimiento del racimo.
Zonas de cultivo.
La uva verdejo está muy extendida en toda la comunidad de Castilla y León, dentro de la cual, donde se encuentra la zona con mayor concentración de viñedos de variedad verdejo, la D.O. Rueda, cuya extensión supera las 13.500Ha plantadas. En la comunidad de Castilla y León también utilizan la variedad verdejo las D.O. de Cigales, León y Toro. Además de las zonas anteriormente citadas, existen viñedos de verdejo en Extremadura y Castilla-La Mancha y pequeñas cantidades plantadas en Asturias, Cataluña y Murcia. En la década de 2010 se empezó a cultivar en Barossa Valley, al sur de Australia.
Vinos.
Los vinos elaborados con variedad verdejo presentan colores que van de amarillo verdoso a pajizo, con tonos acerados y capa ligera media. La graduación alcohólica es moderada y su relación ácido tartárico/ácido málico es elevada. Poseen un buen extracto seco y resultan muy glicéricos, suaves, sabrosos y retrogusto amargo persistente. En nariz aportan aromas intensos, afrutados no notas herbáceas, flores blancas con tonos de almendra amarga, lo que les imprime una fase olfativa inconfundible. En el pasado se elaboraban vinos generosos a partir de uvas verdejo, haciendo una coupage con la variedad palomino, sin embargo, actualmente se tiende a hacer vinos jóvenes monovarietales de excelente calidad, así como otros, no menos buenos, con Sauvignon Blanc y Macabeo. Recientemente se están utilizando estas uvas para elaborar vinos espumosos. En la actualidad también se elaboran caldos de verdejo con crianza en barricas de roble lo que le imprime complejidad al vino.
