Historia.

La Ribeira Sacra es una de las denominaciones de origen más antiguas de Galicia, con más de 2.000 años de historia, este espacio natural presume de una riquísima biodiversidad y la mayor concentración de iglesias románicas de toda Europa. Así, la historia de la vid en la zona está estrechamente relacionada con la vida monacal. En efecto, fueron los monjes los que perfeccionaron las técnicas de cultivo en la Ribeira Sacra, sin olvidarse de cuidar el espectacular paisaje en el que trabajaban. Es sabido que los vinos de la zona han estado y están muy vinculados al Camino de Santiago, tanto al internacionalmente conocido Camino Francés, como al llamado Camino de Invierno, en el que se encuentran las subzonas de Quiroga, Amandi y Chantada. Nos encontramos, de este modo, con cultivos en terrazas a la sobra de los antiguos eremitorios y monasterios que dieron nombre al territorio, en el que los peregrinos tienen el privilegio de caminar por el enlosado de una auténtica vía romana durante varios kilómetros. Tras muchos años de esfuerzo, el vino que antaño se exportaba a la mismísima Roma, vio nacer su Denominación Origen: la Ribeira Sacra fue autorizada por una orden da la Consellería de Agricultura, Gandería e Montes de la Xunta de Galicia, del 3 de Septiembre de 1996, nombrándose mediante la orden de la Consellería de Agricultura, Gandería e Montes de la Xunta de Galicia, del 30 de Mayo de 1995 un Consejo Regulador que controla y protege los distintos tipos de vino autorizados y garantiza su calidad, encargándose así mismo de promocionar el producto en el mercado y proteger su nombre.




La geografía.

La Ribeira Sacra es una de las cinco Denominaciones de Origen que existen en Galicia. Repartida entre las subzonas de Amandi, Chantada, Quiroga-Bibei, Ribeiras do Miño y Ribeiras do Sil. Esta denominación de origen fue creada en 1996, con una extensión de 2.500 hectáreas de viñedo, que suponen un 5,2% del suelo dedicado a la vid en Galicia. Comprende parroquias y lugares de 20 municipios situados a lo largo de las riberas del Miño y del Sil, en el sur de la provincia de Lugo y norte de Ourense. Se agrupan los municipios en cinco subzonas diferenciadas: Amandi, Chantada, Quiroga-Bibei, Ribeiras do Miño y Ribeiras do Sil. La Ribeira Sacra guarda toda la esencia de los vinos gallegos, ya que en ella se cultivan todas las variedades autóctonas gallegas.




El clima y el suelo.

En el Valle del Miño, su clima destaca por una pluviometría de 900 mm anuales y una temperatura media de 14°C. Por su parte, en el Valle del Sil, la pluviometría es de 700 mm y una temperatura media de 13°C. Por otro lado, los suelos de la zona del valle del Miño son similares a los de origen granítico que dominan en toda la Galicia occidental, de fracciones arenosas y limosas, frescos y permeables. Los de los valles del Sil son de tipología oriental, con abundancia de arcillas, aunque el suelo de las terrazas ha mejorado notablemente la calidad de suelo original.




Las uvas.

Los vinos tintos de la Ribeira Sacra se elaboran preferentemente, además de con la variedad mencía que es la predominante, con brancellao, merenzao, tempranillo, sousón y caiño tinto, estando autorizado también el uso de la garnacha tintorera y mouratón. Las uvas blancas autorizadas son la variedad albariño, loureira, treixadura, godello, doña branca y torrontés.




Los vinos.

Los vinos Mencía son del color de la cereza intensa, brillantes y con un ribete púrpura. En nariz producen una primera impresión agradable, siendo afrutados, de intensidad suficiente y de media a larga duración. Entran suaves en boca, provocando una sensación placentera. Su acidez es equilibrada, son potentes en alcohol y están bien de taninos. Resultan sabrosos, a veces algo carnosos y mismo ligeramente astringentes. En retrogusto son elegantes y frutales, con vuelta de frutos rojos maduros, con una intensidad media y una persistencia prolongada. Los vinos blancos, obtenidos de la variedad Godello; son vinos frescos, afrutados y al mismo tiempo con una gran plenitud en boca, con aromas intensos propios de la variedad.

Origen.

Según cuenta la historia, el origen de la uva albariño se sitúa en el siglo XII, época en la que fue importada por unos monjes de Cluny (Francia) que se situaron en tierras gallegas, más concretamente en el Monasterio de Armenteira (Pontevedra), desde donde se extendió al resto de Galicia y norte de Portugal, aunque hay opiniones que sitúan el origen de esta uva en Galicia en la época de los romanos. Independientemente de cuál sea el origen, lo cierto es que es la variedad por antonomasia de uva blanca gallega, y la asociación con su cultura y gastronomía está presente en nuestra mente al igual que las queimadas, las meigas y la tarta de Santiago. Decir albariño es decir Galicia, variedad con la que se elaboran los vinos del mismo nombre.




Características.

La uva albariño se produce en cepas altas, vigorosas que con un desborre precoz y una maduración media/tardía, presentan una fertilidad elevada. Los racimos son de tamaño medio, no demasiado compactos y con pedúnculo corto. Las uvas son de tamaño reducido, uniformes, esféricas y con una epidermis de color verde pálido amarillento en maduración, suave y delicada, aunque en su estrujado presenta un hollejo grueso. Su pulpa es blanda, muy jugosa y con apenas pigmentación, con sabor y aromas peculiares y característicos florales intensos. La albariño también es conocida con los sinónimos albarina, alvarín blanco, alvarinha, alvarinho, azal blanco, galego y galeguinho. Es una cepa que resiste bastante bien a botritis y mildiu, sin embargo, es atacada con facilidad por el oídio y las sequías.




Zonas de cultivo.

Los viñedos de uva albariño se localizan principalmente en Galicia (España), más concretamente en la zona conocida como Rías Baixas en la provincia de Ponteverdra. También existen plantaciones en otras regiones españolas como Cantabria, Castilla y León y Cataluña y en las portuguesas de Monção y Melgaço, en el noroeste del país, que linda con la zona Gallega de Rías Baixas. Las principal Denominación de Origen que utiliza esta uva es la D.O. Rías Baixas así como a la Indicación Geográfica Protegida Vino de la Tierra de Barbanza e Iría, también en Pontevedra. También viñedos de albariño en las áreas vitícolas de California.




Vinos.

Sus monovarietales son los vinos blancos más prestigiosos de Galicia. Presentan una graduación alcohólica elevada y una acidez notable. Son caldos muy potentes en aroma con notas intensas afrutadas y con matices florales. Algunos expertos estiman algo negativo ese “exceso” de aromas afrutados, calificándolos de empalagosos. Pare evitar este, según ellos, defecto, la crianza puede ser una buena opción. es de las pocas uvas blancas españolas que permite una óptima crianza sobre lías. La mayor parte de los vinos se consumen jóvenes, aunque, como se comentó con anterioridad, algunas bodegas los elaboran con crianza en barrica.
