Sus orígenes.
Los primeros datos que especulan con la posibilidad de que el vino que se consumía en las tabernas bilbaínas era precedente del actual blanco de rueda se remontan a finales del siglo XIV. En el siglo XV comienzan a popularizarse los vinos de la zona bajo el apelativo “vinos de Tierra de Medina”. En 1494 aparecen las primeras ordenanzas tendentes a la protección de viñedo del área de Rueda. Isabel la Católica favoreció muy especialmente el vino de la Tierra de Medina y en 1498 dictó unas ordenanzas claramente proteccionistas con el viñedo. Años más tarde, su nieto Carlos V las completaría. Gracias al auge que adquieren las ferias de la ciudad de Medina del Campo, el radio de consumo de vino de La Tierra de Medina se amplía cada vez más y el norte de España se erige como consumidor principal. Al ser el vino una materia fácil de transportar se convierte en producto de cambio de importantes transacciones comerciales. En 1564 se hace necesario elaborar una Ordenanza para luchar contra el fraude del vino, surgido como consecuencia del desarrollo acelerado que había tenido con motivo de las ferias y que llevaba a los cosecheros adulteraciones y otras malas artes a fin de garantizar el suministro. A raíz de esto una nueva Ordenanza distinguirá entre los buenos vinos de la ciudad de Medina y los corrientes del resto de La Tierra de Medina. A finales del XVI, Medina del Campo y Alaejos comparten fama y comercio vinícola y el “blanco de Medina-Alaejos” se encumbra de tal modo que unas Ordenanzas Municipales obligarán, durante un tiempo a los comerciantes de la Corte de Madrid a comprar el vino de La Tierra de Medina en sólo estos dos municipios.
Del esplendor a la filoxera.
El siglo XVIII supone un nuevo esplendor para el vino de la Vieja Castilla. Le toca el turno al blanco de La Nava, que gozará de un enorme auge hasta 1798, año en el que las Ordenanzas reflejan el franco retroceso que estaba experimentando el vino de la zona. El avance del viñedo en La Seca fue también de tal magnitud que dio lugar a una sentencia para tratar de frenarlo y de restituir las tierras a su función original de pastos comunales. Ante la ineficacia de esta medida, se procedió en 1763 a la destrucción de 409 ha de viñas en el término municipal; pese a todo, La Seca entró en el siglo XIX en pleno apogeo vitivinícola. El siglo XIX es un período fructífero para el vino de La Nava, La Seca y Rueda. El comercio tradicional con el norte sigue ocupando un primer plano y se comienza a exportar a Francia, Inglaterra y Cuba. La llegada del ferrocarril favorecerá enormemente el comercio del vino. Por otra parte, el despegue de los viñedos de Castilla la Nueva y Levante mermará la preponderancia de los vinos de La Tierra de Medina y la llegada de la filoxera, en 1884, marcará el final de un largo periodo en la historia de los vinos de Rueda.
Inicios de la DOP Rueda
El primer Reglamento de la DOP «RUEDA» y de su Consejo Regulador fue aprobado mediante Orden del Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación, de 12 de enero de 1980, siendo la primera Denominación de Origen reconocida en la Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla y León. En la actualidad el reglamento vigente es la Orden del 21 de julio de 2008, de la Consejería de Agricultura y Ganadería de la Junta de Castilla y León, por la que se aprueba el Reglamento de la Denominación de Origen Rueda y de su Consejo Regulador”.
Características.
La D.O. Rueda se eleva entre 700 y 800 metros sobre el nivel del mar, con tierras llanas pero altas, que soportan inviernos fríos y muy largos, primaveras cortas con heladas tardías y veranos calurosos y secos, sólo alterados por tormentas. Este factor obliga a las cepas a buscar sus recursos hídricos en lo más hondo del subsuelo, más que en otras zonas de Europa. La brotación suele ser tardía, pudiendo llegar las labores de poda hasta el mes de marzo o principios de abril. Las lluvias son escasas alcanzando unos mínimos de 300 litros y unos máximos de 500 litros anuales. En otros tiempos, al final del invierno se hacía una excava alrededor de la cepa para concentrar el agua de la primavera. A principios del verano, se realizaba un “cobijo” acumulando de nuevo la tierra en torno a la cepa y enterrándola muchas veces hasta la mitad para protegerla de la evaporación estival. Hoy, la mejora del cultivo y la incorporación del goteo compensa estas labores, imposibles de poner en práctica en la actualidad. Por otro lado, la diferencia de temperaturas entre el día y la noche, es el secreto del equilibrio entre el azúcar que la uva gana con el sol y la acidez que no pierde durante la fresca nocturnidad. La insolación llega a las 2.600 horas anuales que serían excesivas si no fuera por la maduración tardía de la uva. Por su latitud, la zona de Rueda queda enclavada en el ámbito mediterráneo. Sin embargo, por su altitud, se declara de influencia continental.

Origen.
Esta uva, muy probablemente tiene su origen en Algaida, en el norte de África y su historia se remonta al reinado de Alfonso VI, Rey de León, entre los siglos XI y XII, cuando, tras la reconquista de Toledo, la zona del Duero fue repoblada por vascones, cántabros y mozárabes. Estos nuevos habitantes la plantaron en las zonas de Toro y Rueda. En el año 1980 se crea la Denominación de Origen Rueda, entre las provincias de Valladolid, Segovia y Ávila, que es la principal zona productora de vinos de uva verdejo.
Características.
Las variedad verdejo es el fruto de cepas semirrastreras, de porte postrado, vigor medio, poco fértiles y de producción elevada. De estas cepas se obtienen unas uvas de piel es fina, color verde amarillento y de tamaño entre pequeño y mediano, uniformes, esféricas, con hollejo de grosor medio y pepitas grandes. Posee una pulpa sin pigmento, jugosa pero insípida. Los racimos tienen un tamaño pequeño-mediano, son compactos y su pedúnculo es muy corto. Los viñedos de verdejo tienen una brotación media, maduración media-tardía y ciclo medio. Es una variedad con un amplio grado de adaptación por lo que tolera bien la sequía moderada y se adapta a suelos poco fértiles y pedregosos. Más cercana al Macabeo que al Chardonnay y Sauvignon Blanc en cuanto a rusticidad y productividad se refiere. Se le atribuyen problemas de corrimiento del racimo.
Zonas de cultivo.
La uva verdejo está muy extendida en toda la comunidad de Castilla y León, dentro de la cual, donde se encuentra la zona con mayor concentración de viñedos de variedad verdejo, la D.O. Rueda, cuya extensión supera las 13.500Ha plantadas. En la comunidad de Castilla y León también utilizan la variedad verdejo las D.O. de Cigales, León y Toro. Además de las zonas anteriormente citadas, existen viñedos de verdejo en Extremadura y Castilla-La Mancha y pequeñas cantidades plantadas en Asturias, Cataluña y Murcia. En la década de 2010 se empezó a cultivar en Barossa Valley, al sur de Australia.
Vinos.
Los vinos elaborados con variedad verdejo presentan colores que van de amarillo verdoso a pajizo, con tonos acerados y capa ligera media. La graduación alcohólica es moderada y su relación ácido tartárico/ácido málico es elevada. Poseen un buen extracto seco y resultan muy glicéricos, suaves, sabrosos y retrogusto amargo persistente. En nariz aportan aromas intensos, afrutados no notas herbáceas, flores blancas con tonos de almendra amarga, lo que les imprime una fase olfativa inconfundible. En el pasado se elaboraban vinos generosos a partir de uvas verdejo, haciendo una coupage con la variedad palomino, sin embargo, actualmente se tiende a hacer vinos jóvenes monovarietales de excelente calidad, así como otros, no menos buenos, con Sauvignon Blanc y Macabeo. Recientemente se están utilizando estas uvas para elaborar vinos espumosos. En la actualidad también se elaboran caldos de verdejo con crianza en barricas de roble lo que le imprime complejidad al vino.
