Origen.

Hay varias teorías sobre el origen del nombre de esta uva, una sería la palabra nebbia, que significa “niebla”, y hace referencia a la que se postra sobre las colinas de la región del Langhe, en el noroeste de Italia, durante el tiempo de la cosecha. Otra posibilidad sería por el velo lechoso, similar a la niebla, que crece sobre la piel de las uvas cuando alcanzan la madurez y, por último, es posible que derive de la palabra italiana nobile, que significa noble, por la nobleza de esta uva. Desde el punto de vista ampelográfico, el origen de la uva nebbiolo se sitúa en la región italiana de Piamonte, aunque otros autores la ubican en Lombardía. En el siglo I A.C., Plinio el Viejo describió la calidad excepcional del vino producido en Pollenzo, una región localizada al noroeste de lo que ahora es la zona DOCG de Barolo. Aunque Plinio no menciona explícitamente el nombre de la uva de la que se hacía el vino de Pollenzo, la descripción del vino guarda similitudes con las descripciones posteriores de los vinos basados en nebbiolo. La primera mención explícita a la nebbiolo data de 1268 donde se dice que la "nibiol" crecía en Rívoli, cerca de Turín. Características.

Esta cepa es muy caprichosa, por decirlo de alguna forma. Tiende a madurar muy tarde, cuando el clima en la región empieza a ponerse difícil. Es muy susceptible a las plagas y podredumbre. En la bodega es delicada, muy propensa a la oxidación, la cual cambia su color, y puede perder sus aromas frutales. Se debe tener mucho cuidado en su manejo desde el viñedo hasta que llega a la botella, pero cuando todos estos factores convergen en una perfecta armonía, el resultado final puede ser excepcional.

Zonas de cultivo.

La uva nebbiolo no es tan viajera como la merlot o la chardonnay; es decir, no la encontramos por todo el mundo. Fuera de su natal Italia, sólo en alguna parte de California, como por ejemplo en Napa Valley, y en el Valle de Guadalupe, en México, podemos probar cierta cantidad de vinos hechos con esta uva.

Vinos.

Esta variedad es autóctona es utilizada para crear dos excelentes vinos principalmente: el Barolo y el Barbaresco. Ambos son tipos de vinos y denominaciones de origen al mismo tiempo, los cuales pueden ser considerados como los mejores vinos de toda Italia. Los vinos elaborados con la variedad nebbiolo pueden requerir años de envejecimiento para equilibrar el nivel de taninos con otras características. Así, la nebbiolo produce vinos tintos de color claro que pueden contar con mucha cantidad de taninos en su juventud. A medida que el vino envejece, desarrolla matices a piel de naranja en el borde de la copa y madura para revelar otros aromas y sabores, como a violetas, alquitrán, hierbas salvajes, cerezas, grosellas, trufas, tabaco y ciruelas pasas.

Origen.

La pinot meunier, también conocida como meunier o schwarzriesling, es una variedad de uva tinta que se utiliza principalmente para la elaboración del champagne francés, junto con otras dos variedades como el pinot noir y el chardonnay. Los primeros escritos en los que se hace referencia a esta variedad datan del siglo XVI. No hace mucho, los viticultores de la región francesa de Champagne no le daban demasiada importancia a esta uva, decantándose por otras variedades que consideraban más adecuadas, pero en la actualidad, debido al cuerpo y riqueza que proporciona al champán, se ha ganado una posición mucho más preponderante en la elaboración de esos vinos. La variedad pinot meunier, al igual que la pinot noir y la pinot gris, es una mutación de la pinot, pues sus capas celulares interiores cuentan con un genotipo similar. En francés meunier significa molinero, por lo que se cree que el origen de su nombre hace referencia a un vello blanco existente en el envés de las hojas, con cierto parecido a la harina espolvoreada. También es conocida como dusty miller en Inglaterra, farineaux y norinin enfariné en Francia y müllerrebe y müller-traube en Alemania, haciendo todos ellos referencia la harina.

Características.

La cepa de variedad pinot meunier es de brotación tardía, por lo que apenas se ve afectada las heladas primaverales, pero sí sufre el ataque del oídio y la botritis. La corteza de los sarmientos de cepas pinot meunier es de color pardo claro, con tonos rojizos, nudos planos y provistos de pruina color malva, y sus zarcillos son finos y no demasiado grandes. Las uvas de esta variedad se agrupan en racimos de tamaño reducido a mediano, compacto, algunas veces alado y de uvas esféricas y pequeñas de color negro-azulado con matices violáceos. Su pulpa es muy jugosa y están recubiertas de una piel gruesa. Tiene unos niveles de acidez superior a la pinot noir y también mayor grado alcohólico. Se desarrolla bien en climas templados, aunque no tiene problemas para adaptarse a temperaturas altas.

Zonas de cultivo.

Es una uva que se cultiva mayoritariamente en Francia, en la zona norte, pero también podemos encontrar viñedos de pinot meunier en Alemania. En Australia y California también está profusamente implantada. La Pinot Meunier es una variedad de uva tinta cuyo origen se cree francés, y que también podemos encontrarnos en otras regiones como Alemania, donde se elaboran vinos monovarietales, o en California y Australia, donde se ha adaptado perfectamente.

Vinos.

Los vinos de pinot meunier tienen una capa muy oscura con matices azulados y violáceos que varía al madurar tomando tonos ocres y anaranjados que se van acrecentando en esta fase. En nariz aparecen frutos rojos y negros, moras, grosellas, fesas, intensificándose el de tierra húmeda y de hierba recién cortada, con recuerdos a violetas y a hinojo. En boca es fino, delicado, intenso y del mismo modo que en la nariz, aparecen las moras, grosellas y el hinojo. Son vinos con poca acidez y menos aun cuando se efectúa una adecuada maduración, lo que le aporta elegancia en su sabor y distinción.
