La destilería propiedad de la familia Berta en Casalotto di Mombaruzzo abrió en la vendimia de 2002, una cosecha histórica para esta familia Y para el desarrollo económico del sector del vino en Asti. Otras fechas importantes para la empresa son:
- 1930. Apertura de una farmacia Berta en Milán.
- Julio de 1866. Nacimiento de Francesco Berta: En el momento en que nació este niño, Italia era un país conocido por sus numerosos viñedos, pero el mundo era completamente diferente al de hoy. Como en todas las familias campesinas, Francesco Berta trabajó desde niño en los viñedos y bodegas, y desde una corta edad, siempre en busca de oportunidades para vender su vino y encontrar nuevos clientes. Apenas cumplió la mayoría de edad, a los 22 años, Francesco se casó con Erminia Barbero. De este matrimonio nacerían dos hijos, siendo el mayor, Giovanni, el que seguiría con el trabajo familiar, y su hermano, Michele, comenzaría la carrera de farmacia.
- 1930. Apertura de una farmacia Berta en Milán por parte de Michele.
- 1947. Construcción de la primera destilería en Nizza Monferrato.
La colaboración de los dos hermanos.
La producción artesanal de licor era común por sus beneficios terapéuticos. Sin embargo, los dos hermanos trabajaron juntos en diferentes ciudades, y Giovanni, quien se casó con Paolina Boido a los 24 años, suministró a Michele vinos base para algunos de los productos que creó: La china Barberavino tinto y el elixir de vino de pasas Moscato , proporcionado en botellas, pero también en vasos en la farmacia. Al mismo tiempo, por supuesto, los clientes de Michele se convirtieron en compradores asiduos de los vinos tradicionales de Giovanni. Gracias a esta apertura en Milán, la familia Berta buscó expandir su negocio hacia las ciudades de Génova, Turín, Brescia, Bérgamo y otros lugares, creando circuitos entre productores y consumidores, consolidando la cultura del vino durante un siglo, no solo a través de una relación personal si no a través de comerciantes expertos y competentes. La intuición de Francesco Berta le había dado a la familia una perspectiva segura y moderna, que mientras tanto se reforzó con el nacimiento de sus nietos: Francesco, Teresina, Erminia, Maria y Paolo. La familia Berta superó la terrible crisis que siguió a la Primera Guerra Mundial, que dañó gravemente la economía del vino. Paolo, el menor de cinco hijos, iba a heredar el negocio, y con grandes sacrificios pudo continuar sus estudios; Mientras se desataba la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se graduó como enólogo en Alba en 1947. Continuó el negocio y lo amplió, abriendo una destilería en Nizza Monferrato, en Via San Nicolao, un sitio histórico donde hoy se encuentra una instalación de envejecimiento de licores. La compañía Berta nunca podría haber tenido una historia así, si no hubiera sido construida sólidamente, basada en la unidad familiar, en la integración y el cambio progresivo a las siguientes generaciones, así como la contribución de las mujeres de la familia. Aunque los hombres llevan el nombre de la familia, de acuerdo con la tradición rural de la familia, las esposas siempre han desempeñado un papel clave, como es habitual en el campo, dirigiendo el hogar y permitiendo que sus hombres se encarguen del negocio.

Gracias a la protección de la cadena alpina, el Piamonte es la región menos lluviosa del norte de Italia (con la excepción del Valle de Aosta). Los vinos del DOC Piedmont son el resultado de una gran tradición vitivinícola combinada con la sabia innovación vitivinícola y el vasto patrimonio de las vides autóctonas, principalmente de bayas negras. El DOC Piedmont incluye básicamente t Utta la viticultura de Piamonte , situada a unos 90% en las colinas al sur del Po, mientras que la viticultura resto se encuentra en las estribaciones de los Alpes franja al oeste y norte de la región se encuentra entre la montaña y El valle del Po. La viticultura se practica enPiamonte desde la época romana y entre los siglos XIX y XX. Piamonte fue la primera región italiana en la producción de vino. El DOC Piedmont ofrece una considerable variedad de tipologías gracias a la gran cantidad de vides, en su mayoría autóctonas, que representan completamente un área de producción tan vasta. Comprende las provincias de Alessandria, Asti, Cuneo, Turín, Novara, Biella, Vercelli.
Los vinos de la región.
Piamonte es la historia y la cultura del vino italiano. La vid ha estado presente en el territorio piamontés desde al menos la época romana y numerosos testimonios trazan sus eventos: Tito Livio menciona a Barbaresco en la historia de Roma; Plinio el Viejo describe las características de los viñedos de Piamonte; en la primera mitad de 1200, Pier de 'Crescenzi, autor del primer tratado de agricultura, elogia los sistemas de cultivo adoptados por los agricultores de Monferrato. Y es precisamente en ese período que las primeras evoluciones tuvieron lugar con la introducción de la agricultura de engorde y con la producción de vino Barbaresco, diferente del que se cultiva hoy, vinificado con la adición de uvas Moscatello y Passeretta para hacerlo dulce y espumoso. En el siglo XVI, se ubicaron buenas áreas de producción en Monferrato y luego, en el siglo XVIII, perfeccionaron otros conocimientos sobre el cultivo de vides en las colinas. En el siglo XIX, Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour se considera un gran admirador del vino Barolo y ofrece su contribución para extender la viticultura piamontesa con la introducción de la uva Pinot, que luego será destruida por la filoxera. Mientras tanto, Barbaresco se vinifica en seco y recibe buenos consentimientos, como los vinos de Borgoña. Debemos esperar hasta 1867 para ver la primera feria del vino organizada en Turín, y en 1894 la fundación de una bodega social para la producción exclusiva de Barbaresco. Durante otro medio siglo, los enólogos piamonteses han producido vinos a granel destinados al consumo masivo. Hoy en día, muchos vinos piamonteses de mayor valor, adecuados para el envejecimiento: Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara, Ghemme, Nebbiolo d'Alba, Bramaterra, Lessona, Boca, Carema, Fara, Roero y Sizzano, se obtienen de las uvas Nebbiolo, mientras que de Variedad de uva Barbera, presente en las denominaciones: Piamonte, Canavese, Pinerolese, Colline Novaresi y Collina Torinese, se obtienen más vinos listos para beber. Otro pilar de la enología piamontesa está representado por Dolcetto, una variedad de uva autóctona que debe su nombre a la maduración temprana de los racimos, rica en azúcar desde la segunda quincena de septiembre.
Clima y territorio.
Superficie de viñedo cultivada tiene una extensión de 48.100 hectáreas de las cuales, un 43% son de montaña, un 30% de colina: 30% y de llano un 27% . La producción total de vino asciende a 2.100.000 hectolitros, dividiéndose ésta en un 60% en vino tinto y rosado y un 40% de vinos blancos. El territorio de Piamonte está formado por áreas montañosas, incluidas en el sector occidental del arco alpino; zonas montañosas, especialmente en el área de Monferrato; zonas planas, poco o casi no destinadas a viñedos. El área montañosa se divide en tres grupos: el primero consiste en las masas de roca cristalina del área de Canavese; el segundo va de la colina de Turín a las colinas de Monferrato; el tercero, el Langhe. El suelo piamontés está formado por suelos arcillosos, margosos, calcáreos, areniscas, tizas y conglomerados, que confieren elegancia y un cuerpo bien estructurado, especialmente a los vinos destinados al envejecimiento. El clima continental, típico de la zona, se caracteriza por fuertes variaciones de temperatura estacionales y diarias, inviernos largos y fríos y veranos calurosos, que son ideales para la producción de vinos con una delicadeza olfativa particular. Los sistemas de cultivo de vid más comunes en el Piamonte son Guyot y, en el área de Canavese para la producción de vinos Erbaluce y Carema, Pergola.
Áreas de producción.
El área del Piamonte es particularmente adecuada para la producción de vinos de alta calidad, en los que se identifican seis macroáreas principales: 1) el área de las estribaciones entre Saluzzo y Turín; 2) el Monferrato Astigiano; 3) el alto Monferrato; 4) el Roero; 5) el Langhe; 6) Alto Piamonte. Los territorios donde se producen los vinos Alta Langa DOCG, Asti DOCG y Brachetto d'Acqui DOCG representan algunas de las máximas expresiones del vino de las áreas de producción respectivas. Saluzzese y Torinese, es el área de producción se refiere a las estribaciones y, en parte, a las zonas montañosas, cubiertas por el antiguo marquesado de Saluzzo y los Valles Alpinos de Turín. Monferrato Asti es el área de producción se extiende desde la provincia de Asti hasta las colinas de Casalesi, hasta el límite de la provincia de Alessandria. Alto Monferrato, es el área de producción se extiende a lo largo del territorio que comienza desde Bormida di Spigno hasta Oltrepò Pavese, y desde la llanura de Alessandria hasta los Apeninos de Liguria. Roero, es el área de producción se extiende a lo largo del eje regional entre el sur, que incluye Roero y Langhe, y el norte, que incluye el área de Biellese, Vercellese y Novarese. Langhe es el área de producción está delimitada por el río Tanaro al oeste, los Alpes de Liguria al sur y Monferrato en el área noreste.
