La comarca del Bages, en el corazón de Cataluña, cerca de las montañas de Montserrat, es una zona de gran tradición vinícola. Los monjes del monasterio de San Benito de Bages impulsaron, desde el siglo X, el cultivo de la vid y la producción de vino en toda su área de influencia. Se convirtió en una de las principales actividades económicas hasta el siglo XIX, cuando la plaga de la filoxera afectó a la mayoría de viñas españolas, lo que, junto al alejamiento de las principales vías de comercialización, comportaron una fuerte crisis. A finales del siglo XIX, esta industria volvió a coger impulso con la creación de la cooperativa de Artés, “Celler Cooperatiu d’Artés”, a principios del siglo XX, que además de preservar la uva picapolla, variedad adaptada a la zona, introdujo nuevas variedades vitícolas y técnicas de producción más elaboradas. En 1995 se creó la denominación de origen.
Características.
La Denominación de Origen Pla de Bages nació en 1995 y agrupa a doce bodegas de la comarca. Estas bodegas se localizan principalmente en las poblaciones de Manresa, Artés, Sant Fruitós de Bages, Fonollosa, Salelles y Maians. Aunque sea una región de tamaño pequeño, es heredera de las grandes extensiones vinícolas de la Cataluña central. El Bages posee un microclima mediterráneo de media montaña, bastante riguroso en invierno, con lluvias escasas. Los suelos ondulados y poco ricos dan como resultado viñas de rendimiento bajo, pero con una uva de mucha calidad. Otro rasgo característico de esta zona son las barracas de viña. Estas construcciones de piedra seca se utilizan para guardar los aperos y para dar cobijo al payés, y se encuentran en todos los campos del Bages. En el valle del Flequer, dentro del Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac, se puede realizar un recorrido de cinco kilómetros en los que se descubre cómo los rabasaires, payeses con un contrato del propietario del terreno que les permitía cultivar las viñas, transformaron el territorio para poder cultivarlas. Si las tinas empleadas para elaborar el vino se encontraban normalmente en el interior de las casas, aquí están construidas en la montaña.
Las uvas y los vinos.
Las uva autorizadas para elaborar vinos D.O. Pla de Bages son, en su variedad tinta, la sumoll, garnacha, ull de llebre, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, syrah, picapoll negro y mandó. Las variedades blancas que tinen la autorización de la D.O. con la sauvignon blanca, gewürztraminer, malvasia aromática, macabeo, marellada, picapoll blanco y chardonnay. La uva picapoll, tanto en su variedad blanca como tinta, es autóctona de la zona y se trata de una uva de grano pequeño, piel muy tierna y con unas manchas o picadas características. Su maduración es tardía, y el vino que se elabora con ella es afrutado, de color amarillo brillante y ligero. Además del picapoll, también se hacen vinos blancos con uvas sauvignon, macabeo, parellada y chardonnay, que resultan afrutados y ligeros. Además de los blancos, también destaca la producción de vino tinto con las variedades tempranillo, merlot, sumoll y cabernet sauvignon y, en menor medida, con garnacha, pinot noir y syrah. Son vinos tintos son afrutados y aromáticos. Para hacer vino rosado se emplea merlot y cabernet sauvignon.
