Pomerol es un testigo de la civilización romana. Antes, dos vías antiguas surcaban su meseta. La una estaba seguida por el poetaAusone cuando el llegaba desde el puerto de Condat cerca de Libourne, a su ciudadde Lucaniac. Son los romanos en primer lugar y luego Los Hospitalarios de San Juan de Jerusalén que cultivaban la vid de esta parroquia. Los peregrinos de Santiago de Compostela que seguían el itinerario tradicional de Pomerol encontraban allí hospitalidad y consuelo. Los vinos generosos de la tierra sin ninguna duda, contribuían a dar el valor necesario para proseguir su peregrinaje y recorrer las numerosas etapas al sur y más allá de los Pirineos. En el siglo XII y durante toda la Edad Media, el viñedo de Pomerol se desarrollaba ampliamente, gracias a las Comunidades de los Hospitalarios de San Juan de Jerusalén de la cual los caballeros de Malta son los herederos hoy. Devastado y abandonado por las tribulaciones de la Guerra de Cien Años, y por las guerras de religión, el viñedo fue reconstituido finalmente en el transcurso de los siglos XV y XVI. Los Hospitalarios establecían entonces, su primera Comunidad en Libourne. En medio del siglo XVIII, el rostro moderno de esta prestigiosa Denominación Pomerol se estaba empezando a dibujabar. Desde entonces, la viticultura conocía un desarrollo creciente. Sus vinos eran buscados por los gastrónomos del mundo entero. Durante el siglo XIX, los barcos extranjeros, aficionados y compradores de sus grandes vinos se llevaban a ultramar el renombre de Pomerol. Los comerciantes de los mejores mercados internacionales, finos conocedores, procuraban visitar regularmente Pomerol con el fin de seguir lo más cerca posible la evolución de los vinos y comprarlos. Entrado en su fase de modernización y extensión, el viñedo debió, al final del siglo XIX, parar su producción ante la invasión filoxérica. Venido de ultra Atlántico, este peligroso parásito destruyó el conjunto del viñedo bordelés. Pomerol se reconstituirá de nuevo. El desarrollo de la viticultura pomerolesa será instigado por la llegada de nuevas familias venidas esencialmente de Correze y Bélgica durante las dos guerras y después de 1945. La actividad importante del negocio desempeñaba un papel primordial para la comercialización de la Denominación Pomerol, varios propietarios de castillos eran también comerciantes. A la confluencia del Isle y Dordogne, el puerto de Libourne seguía siendo un punto de encuentro con el resto de Europa, mucho tiempo señalado por un extraordinario dinamismo que favorecía la actividad comercial de la región. Esta situación geográfica excepcional contribuyó en gran parte al desarrollo de la economía local. En la actualidad, esta joya vitícola permanece como uno de los viñedos más famosos del mundo. Un sindicato joven.
El Sindicato Vitícola y Agrícola de Pomerol fue creado en 1900 y por la declaración de los patronímicos de los fundadores, se encuentran siempre nombres familiares: De los abuelos y bisabuelos de los Productores de hoy. A partir de este tiempo, los responsables habían asignado un doble papel al sindicato orientándole hacia la puesta en común de las técnicas para mejorar la calidad de la Denominación Pomerol y hacia la defensa de este último. Su objetivo: impedir que los Productores de los municipios vecinos “sellen sus barricas con la Denominación Pomerol”. Tal planteamiento se incorpora a la actual Denominación de Origen Controlado - AOC. - que garantiza la autenticidad del producto propuesto sobre la zona de la Denominación Pomerol. Es por esto que el decreto de ley en 1935 que oficializaba la instauración de la AOC. por el Instituto Nacional de Denominación de Origen, fue fácil a Pomerol definir la delimitación precisa de la superficie de su Denominación y sus Reglamentos. El Comité Nacional del I.N.A.O. no tenía más que ratificar el trabajo realizado durante varias décadas por el Sindicato Vitícola y Agrícola de Pomerol.
La tierra y sus cepas.
El viñedo de Pomerol se sitúa en la meseta descendiente en terrazas sucesivas hacia el valle del Isle, en la confluencia del rio Dordogne. Los límites, al Norte por el arroyo del Barbanne, afluente del Isle. Se dice que separaba los países de la lengua de Oc de los de la lengua de Oíl; al este, Saint-Emilion; al Sur y al Oeste por la ciudad de Libourne. El suelo de esta meseta se forma en superficie de “graves”, tierras más o menos compactas; arcillosas y arenosas. Por todas partes el subsuelo tiene óxidos de hierro que se llaman en la región “impurezas de hierro”. Es este subsuelo que confiere al Pomerol su carácter bien marcado. La superficie de la tierra es de 813 hectáreas (o sea 0,7% de la superficie vitícola de Burdeos). Dos tercios de Merlot 80%, un tercio de Cabernet Franc 15% y Sauvignon 5%, esto es más o menos la cepa alrededor de Pomerol. El resultado obtenido es extraordinario. A la riqueza de Borgoña, Pomerol combina la fineza y la elegancia de los Grandes Vinos de Burdeos. Este conjunto de calidad da como resultado un vino extraordinariamente típico. La uva merlot, es una variedad de uva tinta de origen bordelés (Burdeos), al sudoeste de Francia que pertenece a la misma familia de los cabernet. Sus primeras plantaciones datan del siglo XIX. Es una cepa típica del Médoc Francés que, tras la Cabernet Sauvignon, es la segunda uva más plantada en el mundo, como consecuencia de que se aclimatan perfectamente a la mayoría de climas, tanto templados como cálidos. El 14% de las uvas plantadas en Francia son de esta variedad, mientras en Italia alcanza un 3%. La palabra merlot proviene de merle noir (palabra francesa), cuyo significado es mirlo. Su color es azul negruzco similar a la uva merlot.
Características.
La cepa de uva merlot bastante vigorosa, porte semierguido, buena fertilidad pero con poca producción, no se desarrollan muchos racimos por planta. Estos racimos son de tamaño medio a pequeño, con forma cónica alargada y no demasiado compacto. Las uvas merlot son pequeñas, muy uniforme a lo largo del racimo, esféricas, con un hollejo grueso, de color azul muy oscuro. Su pulpa es muy jugosa, consistente, sabrosa, dulce y despigmentada. El desborre es precoz y la maduración entre temprana y media, unos días después que el tempranillo. Si se vendimia antes se logran vinos más ácidos con lo que se aumenta su potencial para elaborar vinos de guarda. Si se retrasa su vendimia se obtienen vinos jugosos y frutales. Se adapta bien a suelos arcillosos y y ricos en calcio. La uva merlot también recibe el nombre de Alicante, Bigney Rouge, Crabutet noir, Merlau Rouge, Merlaut Noir, Merlo, Merlo Noir, Merlot Rouge, Planta de Médoc, Sème du flube, Sémilhon rouge, además de Vitraille. Variedad poco sensible a las enfermedades de la madera y a la desecación del raquis, aunque si es sensible al Mildiu y a la botritis en la maduración. Sensible al Black roth, y también a Cicadelidos y los Ácaros. Las heladas primaverales le afectan, aunque no excesivamente, pero su madera es muy sensible a los inviernos demasiado fríos. Se adapta muy bien a los distintos tipos de suelo. La cosecha con sequía es muy escasa, pero se suple bien con el riego por goteo. Sensible al corrimiento del racimo como consecuencia de la climatología lo que se puede corregir aportando boro. Requiere climas frescos, ya que en climas calurosos pierde pronto su acidez y su equilibrio tánico. Es fundamental realizar un adecuado abonado potásico., Se aconseja la conducción en espaldera, para el apoyo de su vegetación funcionando muy bien con poda de Guyot de siete u ocho yemas.
Zonas de cultivo.
La mayor presencia de la uva merlot se da en Italia y también Francia, en la región del Médoc. En España podemos encontrarla en Navarra y también en Cataluña, La Mancha, Huesca y se está empezando a plantar en Andalucia. También se localizan viñedos de merlot en la península balcánica, en Bulgaria, Croacia, Eslovenia, Montenegro, además de Rumania. Fuera de Europa existen plantaciones de esta variedad en California y región nordeste de Estados Unidos, Argentina, Nueva Zelanda, Sudáfrica, Chile y Australia.
Vinos.
Produce vinos redondos con cuerpo y estructurados. Vinos intensos de buena graduación alcohólica, que agradecen la crianza en madera. Son vinos con pocos taninos y acidez ligera, por lo tanto, se pueden mezclar con vinos más tánicos para aportarles así equilibrio. Es un vino más suave y también más redondo que el Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas complejos, además de elegantes. Aromas a frutas rojas como cereza, ciruela. Especias, tabaco y también trufa. Los vinos más jóvenes poseen un aroma a frutas rojas, como la confitura bayas, cassis y notas vegetales. En los crianza encontramos toques de vainillas, frutas rojas y maduras como ciruela, tabaco, humo, cedro y también tostados, torrefacto como el café. Es de menor carácter tánico y además posee menos acidez que la cabernet Sauvignon, por lo que se suele mezclar con ésta, así como con la cabernet franc, resultando vinos más ligeros y frutales. También se usa para crear vinos merlot monovarietales.
