Historia.
Según documentos de la época, en el año 500 A.C. ya se cultivaba la vid en el Valle del Ebro y en el siglo II A. C. ya existía una importante producción de vino en esta zona. Un factor que influyó en el desarrollo del cultivo de la vid y su comercio fue el asentamiento de itálicos en el Somontano. Estos importaron sus avanzadas técnicas vitivinícolas contribuyendo también a la creación de las compañías de comercio. En la Edad Media, el cultivo del viñedo se extiende a toda la provincia de Huesca. En esta época los monasterios son un factor influyente en el desarrollo del viñedo y provocan un fuerte aumento de plantación de cepas en sus proximidades: el vino, por ser parte de los rituales católicos, es un producto esencial. No obstante, las fechas y momentos especialmente destacables para la Denominación de Origen comienzan en el siglo XIX y especialmente en el XX: en el siglo XIX, tras el ataque de la filoxera en el viñedo francés, tuvo lugar un hecho clave para el futuro vinícola de Somontano: la familia y bodega Lalanne llegan de Burdeos y Buenos Aires a Somontano e implantan en la región variedades de uva como Chardonnay, Merlot o Cabernet – Sauvignon que ya, desde entonces, forman parte del patrimonio vitivinícola de Somontano. Todo ello conllevó un aumento de la producción vinícola de la comarca, la realización de unas buenas ventas y un incremento de la exportación, y que, durante ese siglo, la producción de vino en Huesca se fuera ciñendo cada vez más al Somontano debido a la especialización de la zona en la producción y a la buena calidad de los vinos. En el siglo XX, concretamente en los años 60, el nacimiento de la Cooperativa Comarcal Somontano del Sobrarbe , que juntaba a gran parte de los viticultores de la zona, supone la apuesta de la zona por la viticultura de calidad como motor de la economía y los primeros pasos del nacimiento de la Denominación de Origen Somontano que sería aprobada en 1984. A partir de ese momento, y sobre todo a partir de los años 90, la llegada a Somontano de grandes proyectos empresariales de bodega con fuertes inversiones coloca a los vinos Somontano entre los mejores de todo el país. La llegada del siglo XXI Somontano supone un nuevo momento histórico marcado por la llegada de nuevas bodegas, la inversión de capital, el crecimiento en producción y comercialización y el reconocimiento a la calidad de sus vinos por parte de las guías especializadas más prestigiosas y de los consumidores. Su éxito es consecuencia de todo ello y de un trabajo conjunto por parte de los viticultores, las bodegas y el Consejo Regulador en aras a ofrecer a los amantes del vino un producto para disfrutar, de calidad, único, versátil, en el que el territorio además de ser un elemento esencial es un destino turístico de primer orden.

Situado en el corazón de la provincia de Huesca y a los pies de los Pirineos, el Somontano es un lugar privilegiado que reúne las condiciones perfectas para la elaboración de grandes vinos. Su combinación única de altitud adecuada, clima de contrastes y suelos excepcionales para el cultivo de la vid convierten a esta Denominación de Origen en un sitio único en el que las uvas dan lo mejor de sí mismas y se convierten en vinos ideales para cada momento. Por todo ello, desde su tradición centenaria aliada con la innovación, con el hito del nacimiento de la Denominación de Origen en 1984 y con los valores de amor a la tierra, carácter, excelencia, inconformismo, origen y pasión por el trabajo guiando su camino, Somontano es sinónimo de calidad y de magia. A los pies del Pirineo de Huesca, hacemos vinos con un espíritu rebelde, fresco y moderno. Vinos blancos, rosados y tintos creados para disfrutar, ideales para cada ocasión y momento. Las características que muestran la riqueza y recursos de la denominación de origen son sus bodegas. Treinta y dos empresas vitivinícolas que transforman las quince variedades de uvas procedentes de cuatro mil hectáreas de plantación en excelentes vinos. El tejido empresarial de las bodegas ha destinado fuertes inversiones a viñedos, instalaciones y recursos humanos lo que a su vez ha contribuido notablemente a revitalizar el territorio, generar empleo, asentar población, mejorar la calidad de vida, convertir esta zona vitivinícola en una de las más prestigiosas del país y promocionar la riqueza natural, histórica y cultural del Somontano a través de la vinculación de sus vinos con el territorio del que nacen. Las variedades de uvas tintas que tenemos son: Tempranillo, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Parraleta, Moristel, Merlot, Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet-Sauvignon. Las variedades de uva blanca: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Macabeo, Gewûrztraminer, Garnacha Blanca, Chadornay, Alcañon.
El terreno y su clima.
Somontano está distribuido por diversas zonas, con suelos diferentes, y ubicado a una altitud de entre 350 y 400 metros sobre el nivel del mar, le aportan especiales cualidades a la uva y nos permiten elaborar vinos blancos, rosados y tintos con personalidad propia. Zonas de suelos calizos y pedregosos, con presencia de yeso en algunos casos, y una textura franco-arenosa. Un tipo de suelos que se caracteriza por su bajo nivel de fertilidad y, en consecuencia y de forma general, por dar vinos de gran calidad. Los suelos pedregosos contribuyen a retener la humedad del suelo, favoreciendo su drenaje e impidiendo la evaporación directa. Además, el calor que recogen durante el día lo van liberando por la noche, con efectos muy positivos durante el periodo de maduración de la uva. Además, el clima de la zona es mediterráneo continental, con una pluviometría anual escasa, unos 400 mm. También la gran diferencia térmica entre el día y la noche de los veranos del Somontano contribuyen a una maduración lenta y óptima de la uva. Así, la combinación de los suelos pobres con el clima cálido y seco permite alcanzar una completa maduración de la uva, con producciones ajustadas y un excelente estado sanitario. Y es el conjunto de estos factores el que configura y da forma a los vinos de Somontano.
