Suelo y clima.
Son cultivos en zona de colinas, aunque en las llanuras es muy productiva si lo que se desea es conseguir cantidad. Los terrenos a los que se adapta son variados: calcáreos, arcillosos, rocosos, arenosos.. La exposición ideal es sur, sureste con una altitud no superior a los 400 metros en la zona de Asti. En la zona de Asti los suelos son predominantemente arenosos y de arcilla. El clima de la zona de Asti es continental con unos inviernos largos y duros con mucho frío y unos veranos calurosos. La sequía estival es algo frecuente y la lluvia se concentra entre los meses de noviembre y mayo. La precipitación media anual es 700-800 mililitros. En los años 50 se prefería un marco de plantación alto, con 6.000/7.500 cepas por hectárea en contraespaldera, con una poda Guyot y como se realizaban todos los trabajos a mano, las hileras estaban próximas unas de otras. Con la llegada de la mecanización, las distancias entre filas de cepas aumentaron, para poder dejar paso a las máquinas. El marco de plantación más habitual era de 3.500 cepas por hectárea y se buscaba la difusión de tipos de poda en altura para no aumentar la cantidad de uva producida por cepa. En la actualidad se ha optado por un término medio y los marcos de plantación más frecuentes son de 4.000 a 5.000 cepas por hectárea.
La variedad de uva reina.
Aunque podemos suponer razonablemente que Barbera se cultivó en esta área desde la Edad Media, el primer documento histórico que indica su presencia, un acto catastral de la ciudad de Chieri, data de 1512. Gracias a un intenso cultivo en toda esta área, el Barbera pronto se convirtió en el vino que los agricultores destinaron a su propio consumo. Este consumo diario ha contribuido significativamente a crear a tiempo su identidad específica que podemos encontrar incluso hoy. La Barberá se extendió rápidamente por todo Monferrato, Astesano y Alejandría. Además, gracias a su inclusión en la primera versión de la "Ampelografía", escrita en 1798 por el Conde Nuvolone, se convirtió en una de las variedades de uva piamontesas reconocidas. Precisamente en este período, Barberá conquistó las grandes ciudades vecinas y más tarde, gracias al ferrocarril recién realizado hacia el puerto de Génova, también los mercados internacionales. EL DOC.
La Barbera d'Asti fue reconocida como DOC (Denominación de Origen Controlada) en 1970; en 2000 se incluyeron tres subzonas diferentes en su especificación: la de Nizza (que se convirtió en un DOC independiente en 2016), la de Tinella y la de Colli Astiani. Finalmente, en 2008, la Barberá d'Asti ha sido reconocida como una Denominación de Origen Controlada y Garantizada (DOCG). Las uvas Barbera se cultivan en las colinas más soleadas del Asti y en las zonas de Monferrato. Por lo general, se cosechan en la segunda mitad de septiembre . Este proceso de cultivo es único para todas sus variedades y tiene como objetivo mejorar la calidad del vino Barbera. El rendimiento de producción está limitado a un máximo 7 toneladas, correspondientes a 49 hectolitros,por hectárea. La subzona de Tinella comprende toda el área de los siguientes municipios: Costigliole d'Asti, Calosso, Castagnole Lanze, Coazzolo, Isola d'Asti. Las uvas al igual que en la subzona de Nizza, está copado en más de un 90% de la variedad Barbera, siendo el resto otras variedades de uva roja. La subzona de Colli Astiani, la zona de producción comprende el área de los siguientes municipios: Azzano, Mongardino, Montaldo Scarampi, Montegrosso d'Asti, Rocca d'Arazzo, Vigliano, los distritos Montemarzo y San Marzanotto Valle Tanaro en el municipio de Asti, Isola d'Asti y el área en el lado izquierdo de la carretera estatal Asti-Montegrosso, siendo la uva Barbera la de mayor producción a igual que en las otras subzonas.

Origen.
La variedad barbera tiene su origen las colinas de Monferratto, en el Piamonte central, donde ya era conocida en el siglo XIII. En la Catedral de Casale Monferrato, se conservan documentos de esa época que detallan el contrato del arriendo de las viñas plantadas con la uva "de bonis vitibus barbexinis", también conocida como barbera. Ampelográficamente se especula su origen en la región de Oltrepò Pavese, en Lombardía. En los siglos XIX y XX, las olas de inmigrantes italianos llevaron esta vid a América, asentándose en California y Argentina. Fuera de Italia, se cultivan en California, Brasil, Argentina y Australia, entre otros países. Análisis genéticos relacionan a la uva barbera con la uva española monastrell, conocida en Francia como mourvedre. En 1985, la región de Piamonte fue golpeada por un escándalo que involucraba a los productores de barbera, a los que se acusaba de haber añadido metanol a sus vinos, produciendo la muerte de varias decenas de personas y provocando daños en la salud de otras muchas. La mala prensa provocó que esta uva fuera eclipsada y que la montepulciano la sustituyera como la segunda uva tinta más ampliamente plantada en Italia durante la década de 1990.
Características.
La variedad Barbera es una cepa de mucho vigor, con capacidad para dar una producción muy alta cuando se cultiva con las adecuadas condiciones de poda y otros métodos. Hay que medir mucho esos rendimientos, ya que el exceso de uva provoca una disminución de la calidad afrutada de la uva y acentua la acidez y la intensidad natural de esta variedad. En Piamonte, la vid es valorada por sus rendimientos y su habilidad a madurar dos semanas antes que la nebbiolo, incluso en viñedos con una exposición menor que la ideal. Las uvas Barbera se desarrollan con facilidad en el clima cálido de de Italia, y en particular, en el de la región de Piamonte, al noroeste de la península itálica. Los hollejos de la barbera precipitan los antocianos pocos días después del inicio de la fermentación. Es una variedad de uva tinta cuyo contenido tánico es bajo. Fuera del Piamonte en la DOC Oltrepò Pavese Barbera en Lombardía, DOC Colli Bolognesi en la Emilia Romaña, DOC Castel San Lorenzo Barbera en la Campania. Fuera de Europa se la encuentra en Australia donde se adaptó muy bien al suelo, también hay uva barbera en California y en Sudamérica en Argentina, Brasil y Uruguay donde llegó de la mano de los inmigrantes italianos. En Argentina, principalmente en Mendoza y en San Juan, aunque se da excelente en Salta también a pesar de la escasa cantidad cultivada. En Mendoza representa el 0,47% del total de las variedades tintas, que, aunque parezca poco, es apenas seguida por Cabernet Franc con un 0,79% en la participación de uvas tintas para vinificar.
Vinos.
Cuando son jóvenes, los vinos ofrecen un aroma muy intenso, fresco y a mora. En sus versiones más ligeras muestra notas de cerezas, frambuesas, arándanos y, en los vinos tintos hechos de uvas más maduras, notas de cereza y mora. Por lo general, organolépticamente, los vinos de barbera de gran calidad tienen un color rojo rubí, intenso, cubierto. Su nariz es fundamentalmente floral con toques de pétalos de rosa, violetas, salvia, apareciendo aromas frutales a cerezas, ciruelas, grosellas, frambuesas. También aparecen aromas especiados a pimienta, clavo, canela. Su boca es equilibrada, con buena textura, con acidez marcada pero no excesiva, cuerpo medio, largo, grato que invita a seguir degustando.
