Origen del Consejo Regulador.
En su inicio, se certificaban las partidas destinadas a venta como vino a granel de Ribeiro. Partiendo de las declaraciones de cosecha que presentaban los viticultores y elaboradores en el Consejo Regulador, se certificaba cada partida expedida para la venta, mientras los veedores del consejo en visita de inspección, controlaban las partidas a la venta en los establecimientos. Sobre el año 1957 se realizaron embotellados que se comercializaban principalmente en Galicia. En ese año, una bodega pionera de la D.O. Ribeiro embotellaba vinos gasificados siguiendo el procedimiento de los elaboradores del Penedès. Actualmente, los vinos espumosos están amparados legalmente por la Denominación de Origen. En 1964 se celebró por primera vez la Feria del Vino del Ribeiro en Ribadavia (Ourense), promocionando la feria con una caravana que recorría toda Galicia. A las botellas se le colocaba una especie de precinta que cubría el tapón y que era expedida por el Consejo Regulador especialmente para la ocasión. Sobre el año 1967 comenzaron los primeros controles de las etiquetas de los vinos mediante un troquel realizado en la misma etiqueta de las botellas. A partir del año 1977 se fue imponiendo, con dificultad y esfuerzo, la precinta certificadora para el reconocimiento público de la marca D.O. Ribeiro. El diseño de la primera precinta se hizo diferenciándose de las que en aquella época existían en España. Así, se optó por mostrar el mapa de cada zona de la región basándose en los escudos y anagramas que representan el Ribeiro y Galicia: escudo de la Xunta de Galicia, escudo de Ourense, escudo de Ribadavia y los 13 roeles del Castillo de Ribadavia. En el año 1992 se rediseña su nueva imagen con otras medidas pero con los mismos anagramas.
El Ribeiro y sus dominios.
La Denominación de Origen Ribeiro se ubica en Galicia, en el borde noroccidental de la provincia de Ourense y en las confluencias de los valles formados por los ríos Miño, Avia y Arnoia. Una comarca a 45 km. del océano Atlántico, en una zona muy particular y de excelente aptitud para el cultivo de la vid. Con una extensión aproximada de 2.500 hectáreas, la zona de producción de los vinos protegidos por la denominación de origen Ribeiro abarca los ayuntamientos de Ribadavia, Arnoia, Castrelo de Miño, Carballeda de Avia, Leiro, Cenlle, Beade, Punxín y Cortegada; las parroquias de Banga, Cabanelas y O Barón, en el ayuntamiento de O Carballiño; las parroquias de Pazos de Arenteiro, Albarellos, Laxas, Cameixa y Moldes en el ayuntamiento de Boborás; los lugares de Santa Cruz de Arrabaldo y Untes en el ayuntamiento de Ourense, y del ayuntamiento de Toén los lugares de Puga, A Eirexa de Puga, O Olivar, el pueblo de Feá y Celeirón y la parroquia de Alongos; y el lugar de A Touza del ayuntamiento de San Amaro.
El clima reinante en esta zona.
El clima es un factor clave que determina la agronomía, variedades y estilo de vinos. La D.O. Ribeiro se sitúa en una zona de transición de Galicia de carácter mediterráneo suavizado por la influencia atlántica debida a la escasa distancia del océano. De hecho, esta distancia debería suponer un mayor carácter atlántico del entorno, pero la orografía de cadenas montañosas que limita la denominación por el oeste y norte, ejerce un importante efecto protector, generando así una viticultura en donde la maduración alcohólica se desarrolla paralela a la maduración fenólica, conservando un equilibrado frescor propiciado por la acidez natural y con un dominio del tartárico sobre el málico. El carácter ligeramente continental, en conjunción con las corrientes de aire dominantes, provocan una importante diferencia térmica entre el día y la noche, lo que favorece la lenta maduración respetando el componente aromático y frescor natural. En Ribeiro se distinguen tres valles generados por sus tres ríos principales: Miño, Avia y Arnoia. Es un entorno natural que está formado por laderas, bancales y terrazas, que son excelentes para la producción de vinos de calidad basados en la viticultura. Todo ello está favorecido por un microclima muy peculiar, ventilado y con buena exposición para la maduración de las variedades autóctonas del Ribeiro. La influencia marítima que penetra por la cuenca del río Miño, crea bandas de ecotonía climática sobre las laderas, generándose un mayor carácter atlántico según asciende en la cota, lo que limita el cultivo aproximadamente a los 450 metros de altura para las variedades cultivadas en la Denominación de Origen.
Los suelos.
El Ribeiro es una zona de intenso cultivo del viñedo desde muy antiguo. Desde la recuperación de la agricultura por los monjes benedictinos hacia el final del primer milenio hasta la actualidad, las características de los suelos cultivados difieren notablemente de los suelos naturales, ya que el hombre viene cultivándolos a lo largo de generaciones. Los suelos del Ribeiro se caracterizan por estar englobados en tres tipos principales. La mayoría se desarrollan a partir de materiales graníticos, con texturas franco-arenosas y en menor medida areno- francosas. También encontramos suelos de materiales metamórficos de esquistos, y los desarrollados a partir de materiales sedimentarios con texturas más francas. Característico del Ribeiro es el “sábrego”, granito descompuesto, muy abundante en la zona. Los suelos de cultivo disponen de una profundidad media efectiva que oscila entre 70 y 100 cm. Sus elevados contenidos en arena, sobre todo en el horizonte superficial, contrastan con el escaso contenido en arcilla, por debajo del 20%. Normalmente son suelos de reacción ácida, pobres en materia orgánica y con un contenido en calcio que tiende a ser bajo. Gran parte del cultivo de los suelos están abancalados para disminuir las pendientes y facilitar el laboreo aprovechando las laderas y la insolación. Una característica que marca el territorio de la D.O. Ribeiro es el minifundismo, la compleja orografía y el uso de técnicas tradicionales en los trabajos del viñedo.
Una tradición de miles de años.
El cultivo del viñedo ha sido históricamente la principal fuente de riqueza de la comarca. No se conoce con certeza cuál ha sido el origen de las variedades autóctonas del Ribeiro, pero sí se sabe por testimonio de Estrabón, que en la segunda mitad del siglo II antes de Cristo ya se elaboraba vino en Ribeiro. Algo que también se evidencia en el descubrimiento de lagares que datan de esa época. En el siglo III, en el Ribeiro ya se dispondría de un complejo varietal relativamente bien ajustado a sus condiciones ecoclimáticas. Posteriormente, las invasiones germánicas supusieron un fuerte retroceso en la historia de la viticultura en la comarca, aunque el cultivo de la vid no desapareció. Tras esta etapa, en la Alta Edad Media volvió a resurgir con fuerza el cultivo de la vid en el Ribeiro, constituyendo uno de los principales cultivos a las puertas del año mil. Durante esta etapa, los más importantes centros eclesiásticos gallegos asentaron en el Ribeiro granjas y prioratos para proveer de vino Ribeiro a las bodegas de sus sedes principales. Los monasterios fueron los grandes impulsores del viñedo, incentivando su plantación por medio de contratos forales. Lo mismo ocurre con importantes familias aristocráticas, grandes y medianos propietarios, que mostraron interés por adquirir viñedos en el Ribeiro en el siglo XI. Unos de los principales impulsores de la recuperación de la vid en el Ribeiro fueron los monjes benedictinos y cistercienses del monasterio de San Clodio, aunque las variedades autóctonas ya existían antes. Es preciso citar a los monjes del Monasterio de Oseira y Melón, fundados por el císter, quienes desenvolvieron la viticultura del Ribeiro. De los siglos XII y XIII datan los documentos en los que los monjes de Oseira firmaron contratos con distintos propietarios de terrenos en el Ribeiro para la plantación de viñedo. Así como los de Celanova, San Martiño Pinario y los Cabildos de las catedrales de Santiago, Lugo y Ourense, cuyos monjes se desplazaron a las zonas del Ribeiro. Allí disponían de grandes viñedos y gestionaron numerosas granjas y prioratos que se dedicaban al cultivo de la vid. El floreciente comercio y el aprecio por los vinos del Ribeiro quedan reflejados en la aprobación de un decreto en el que figuran los precios de los víveres que se comercializaban en Santiago de Compostela en 1133. Entre ellos, se detalla el vino ribeiro como el más caro de cuantos se vendían en la población. Unos siglos más tarde los ingleses se convertirían en los principales clientes para el producto fuera de la península.
Nuevos ribeiros.
Durante todo el siglo XVI y la primera mitad del XVII, el Ribeiro gozaba de un comercio floreciente y cultural. Cervantes nombra en varias de sus novelas el vino de Ribeiro. Fue una de las mayores riquezas de Galicia, hasta que las plagas de procedencia americana asolaron la comarca durante el siglo XIX. En 1853 llegó el oidium; la segunda plaga, en 1886, fue el mildium; y la tercera, a partir de 1890, apareció la filoxera. Fue entonces cuando se hizo necesario injertar las vides en pies americanos, lo que propició la introducción de variedades foráneas, más resistentes y productivas, en detrimento de las variedades autóctonas. Actualmente, el Ribeiro vuelve a sus orígenes con fuerza apostando por las uvas locales, recuperando y creando nuevas plantaciones mediante programas de reconversión y reestructuración de viñedo. Además, en los últimos décadas se han incorporado nuevas bodegas que, junto con los avances tecnológicos, tiene como objetivo la búsqueda de la calidad y la máxima expresión de las variedades autóctonas. Una denominación de origen que defiende el paisaje y territorio como la expresión de su historia cultural del vino.
