Descripción.

La región del Douro está situada en el nordeste de Portugal, en la cuenca hidrográfica del río Duero. Una zona protegida por montañas que le confieren características climáticas idóneas para el desarrollo de una importante industria vitivinícola que produce vinos que seducen y sorprenden en todo el mundo. Los Douros blancos.
El esfuerzo realizado alrededor de los tintos no ha impedido el desarrollo en la región de unos blancos que están empezando a encontrar su sitio dentro del panorama de los vinos tranquilos portugueses. Se elaboran con variedades autóctonas (una apuesta que ha dotado a la región de una singularidad de la cual presume justificadamente), entre las que predominan la rabigato, la viosinho, la arinto, la malvasía, la moscatel y la confusa gouveio, confusa porque se puede encontrar con el nombre de verdelho, a pesar de que no es la misma que su sinónima de Madeira, y tampoco tiene nada que ver con la verdejo tan utilizada en España. Es precisamente esa frescura uno de los puntos comunes que tienen muchos vinos blancos de la región, aportada en parte por la tierra plagada de “xisto” o pizarra. La calidez de la zona (más de 40 grados en verano), que juega en su contra, provoca que los vinos no realicen la fermentación maloláctica.

Los Oportos.
En la misma región, donde nacen para ser envejecidos después en Vilanova de Gaia, los oportos mantienen el tipo de elegancia, complejidad y estilo propios de cada casa. Algunos elaboradores, y el propio IVDP, apuestan por reforzar el enoturismo en la ciudad y en el valle como una herramienta fortísima de conocimiento y difusión de estos vinos, no demasiado fáciles de entender para el inexperto. La touriga nacional es una variedad de uva tinta considerada por muchos como la mejor de Portugal donde alcanza desde las tierras de los vinos verdes del Miño hasta la región vitícola del Algarve. Características.

La producción media es de un kilo al 1,5 kg/cepa; causa del abandono de su cultivo. Es una variedad de brotación y floración tempranas, alcanza la madurez a mediados del periodo de vendimia. Prefiere suelos poco profundos y pedregosos. Los racimos de la touriga nacional son de tamaño pequeño, de forma cilíndrico-cónica y de media compacidad. Las bayas son de color negro azulado, de tamaño mediano, ligeramente aplanadas y con un hollejo medio grueso. Los pequeños granos de touriga nacional tienen una alta relación piel-pulpa, lo cual aumenta la extracción en el vino, A partir de estas uvas pueden obtenerse vinos muy aromáticos e intensos, con un alto contenido tánico. Las pequeñas uvas de touriga nacional tienen un alto ratio de piel con respecto a la pulpa, lo que aumenta la cantidad de extracto seco en la elaboración del vino. Estas uvas pueden producir un vino intenso muy aromático y con una alta cantidad de taninos. Es una variedad muy empleada en ensamblajes de vinos no fortificados, y la base de muchos oportos legendarios. La touriga nacional es versátil y produce vinos diversos, pero siempre elegantes, con un buen grado alcohólico, una gran concentración de color, alta complejidad, taninos finos, sabores intensos, volumen, equilibrio y aromas florales distintos.
