Bodegas Campo Viejo es una de las firmas más destacadas de Pernod Ricard Bodegas, uno de los emporios vinícolas más importantes de España y con más prestigio internacional, con presencia en más de 70 países de todo el mundo. La espectacularidad de la arquitectura de Bodegas Campo Viejo y la eficacia de su moderno proceso de elaboración colocan a Campo Viejo a la vanguardia de la nueva cultura del vino. Sus nuevas instalaciones se inauguraron en 2001 (sustituyendo a la antigua bodega que databa de 1967), diseñadas por el arquitecto Ignacio Quemada Sáenz-Badillos, discípulo de Rafael Moneo. Una obra maestra subterránea (más de 20 metros bajo tierra), lo que le otorga unas condiciones ideales para la crianza de los vinos. En Bodegas Campo Viejo se elaboran tres marcas de peso del grupo Pernod Ricard: Campo Viejo, Azpilicueta y Alcorta, bajo la batuta de la reputada enóloga Elena Adell.
El viñedo y sus uvas.
Disponen de viñedos de Tempranillo en tres subregiones distintas dentro de Rioja. Las condiciones que se dan en Rioja Alta son ideales y generan sabores suaves. Por último, el entorno seco y cálido de Rioja Baja proporciona sabores ricos y profundos. Al combinarse los tres, se crea el verdadero sabor de los vinos de Rioja. Además de la Tempranillo, uva reina de la denominación de origen, en Campo Viejo trabajan con la Graciano, que aporta a los vinos estructura y potencial de envejecimiento, y con la Mazuelo, que aporta intensidad a los ensamblajes.
El origen de su nombre.
En tiempos del Imperio Romano, los soldados de la 4ª legión licenciados con honores, eran recompensados con una parcela de terreno en Villar de Arnedo, población que entonces era conocida como Campus Veteranus y que derivó en la actual denominación de Campo Viejo. En 1959 José Ortigüela fundó una pequeña bodega en La Rioja. Su nombre es un recordatorio del terreno existente antaño en Villar de Arnedo, donde José pasó su infancia: el “Campo Viejo”. Su sueño, que hoy es ya una realidad, era crear una marca de calidad de Rioja. En la actualidad, Campo Viejo, en la marca de Rioja más vendida en el mundo, con presencia en más de 70 países y un fuerte crecimiento en EEUU, Reino Unido, Alemania y Canadá.
Una apuesta por el arte urbano.
Campo Viejo lleva unos años apostando por el arte urbano (street art) como forma de promoción de sus marcas. A través de colaboraciones con artistas como Okuda y Remed, el color vibrante ha llegado a sus viñas en forma de una colosal estatua, a su packaging y a diferentes intervenciones en eventos celebrados en ciudades de todo el mundo. La variedad viura, también muy conocida como macabeo, es una variedad de uva blanca utilizada en la elaboración de vino. Existe controversia al origen de la uva viura, en parte debido a la tardía detección de la sinonimia entre viura y macabeo. Hay autores que sitúan su origen en Asia Menor, aunque la primera cita de viura la ubica en los Pirineos orientales franceses, en contraposición a otras opiniones que colocan su origen en la región de Aragón. Por tanto, desde el punto de vista vitivinícola, se desconoce a ciencia cierta su origen, pero se puede asegurar, sin temor a equivocarse, que los primeros vinos de uva viura se elaboraron en un área situado entre el sureste de Francia y el noreste de España.
Características.
Las viña viura es una variedad rústica que se adapta con facilidad a distintos tipos de suelos, aunque se desaconseja para lugares frescos y húmedos o demasiado secos, ya que tiene facilidad para el desecamiento y a la senescencia y caída precoz de las hojas. Es una uva formada en racimos grandes, compactos y con pedúnculo corto, con forma cónica larga, rodeados de hojas grandes formadas por cinco lóbulos con un seno peciolar poco abierto o incluso cerrado. Las uvas son de color amarillo dorado, de un tamaño mediano, esféricas y uniformes y que, en su estrujado, producen un hollejo grueso. Es una variedad con cepas bastante vigorosas, de porte erguido y de alto rendimiento productivo, tanto por hectáreas como en mosto. Su fertilidad es alta, así como sus rendimientos. Esta variedad es muy sensible a las polillas y a la botrytis cinerea o podredumbre gris. Su sensibilidad al oídio y la necrosis bacteriana es media alta, así como a los ácaros. Por el contrario, no es demasiado sensible al mildiu y al corrimiento de racimo. Es una uva de brotación relativamente tardía, así como su maduración mientras su desborre es temprano, lo que la hace sensible a las heladas.
Zonas de cultivo.
Las regiones que producen vino blanco a partir de esta uva son principalmente La Rioja y Penedés, siendo muy usada para la elaboración de cava en Cataluña, aunque también se elaboran vinos blancos con uva viura en Aragón, Castilla la Mancha, Valencia y Extremadura. En Francia es habitual en la región de Languedoc-Rosellón. Es la variedad más utilizada para los vinos de Rioja, los espumosos de Rueda y muy principal en la elaboración del cava.
Vinos.
La variedad viura es muy polivalente, apta para la fermentación en barrica y, según las condiciones de cultivo, permite obtener distintos tipos de vinos blancos secos, espumosos o incluso vinos dulces naturales. Son vinos ligeros y agradables, equilibrados en acidez y azúcar y de color pálido. En nariz da lugar a vinos con aromas florales y frutales, como la manzana, de intensidad media alta. En boca produce vinos ligeramente astringentes que, cuando han sido vendimiados tardíamente y son envejecidos en madera, recuerdan a la miel y frutos secos. También son utilizados en el coupage de los tintos jóvenes o de crianza, imprimiendo acidez al conjunto, sobre todo cuando se ha hecho una vendimia precoz en la zona centro, o cuando el cultivo es en climas frescos. El grado alcohólico de estos vinos ronda 13,6º con acidez media de 5,3.
