Los vinos.
Los vinos blancos se elaboran a partir de las variedades blancas, preferentes: Godello, Loureira, Treixadura, Dona Branca, Albariño, Torrontes y Lado. Autorizada: Palomino. Los vinos tintos se elaboran con con uvas tintas preferentemente como la Mencía, Tempranillo, Brancellao, Merenzao, Sousón, Caíño Tinto, Espadeiro e Ferrón o bien las autorizadas: Gran Negro, Garnacha Tintureira y Mouratón. los vinos espumosos son vinos que se han obtenido según el método tradicional, elaborado con un mínimo del 85% de uva de la variedad godello. El vino tostado es un vino naturalmente dulce, elaborado a partir de las variedades tintas o de Godello. Todos estos vinos se elaboran con uva procedente de parcelas con limitación de producción y la crianza de los mismos, es en barricas de roble, dando lugar a tres variantes como son barrica, crianza y gran reserva.
La denominación de Origen.
Valdeorras es una de las cinco Denominaciones de Origen de Galicia. Abarca las superficies vitícolas de los municipios de A Rúa, A Veiga, Carballeda de Valdeorras, Larouco, O Barco, O Bolo, Petín, Rubiá y Vilamartín y sus vinos contienen esencia propia gracias a las características físicas comunes que posee. Se caracteriza por un clima mediterráneo-oceánico, con inviernos fríos y veranos cálidos y otoños y primaveras suaves. Es ideal para vinos secos de primera calidad con un óptimo por encima de los 450 m. de altitud, siendo Valdeorras privilegiada al situarse toda la comarca entre los 300m y los 700m de Altitud, y estando así toda ella en la Zona I de Winkler. Además, Valdeorras presenta una gran diversidad de suelos para la superficie de viñedo inscrita que posee: 1.300 hectáreas. El río Sil atraviesa la comarca de este a oeste, originando un valle con marcado carácter asimétrico: laderas con mucha pendiente en su margen izquierdo y más suaves en el derecho, esencialmente, en los municipios de O Barco, A Rúa y Vilamartín. Otros ríos menos caudalosos como el Xares, Bibei, Cigüeño y Casaio, en las tierras de O Bolo, Larouco, Rubiá y Carballeda, no llegan a formar valles pero sí proporcionan laderas donde se cultiva el viñedo, pudiendo observarse bancales en pendientes del Bibei y Xares. Estos suelos de exposición sur, siempre han sido considerados de vocación vitícola, al proporcionar menos fertilidad y buen drenaje, lo que garantiza un rendimiento más moderado y con uvas de maduración adecuada..
Historia de los vinos.
Los vinos de Valdeorras encuentran su origen en la época romana. Fue en estos años cuando se empezó a plantar viñedo y construir lagares en la zona que crearon una cultura secular en la atención de la viña y la elaboración de vinos. Una cultura que también se ha visto influenciada por la llegada de los grandes monasterios de la mano de la cristianización. Años estos que vinieron seguidos por un arduo camino que, finalmente, dio lugar al reconocimiento de la Denominación de Origen Valdeorras por Orden Ministerial en 1945. Los objetivos de esta entidad se dividen en dos ejes complementarios: por un lado, se busca la recuperación de variedades autóctonas como el Godello y el Mencía y, por el otro, se trata de apostar por la calidad, impulsar el control, facilitar la promoción y buscar nuevos caminos de expansión y comercialización. Tras años de esfuerzo investigador, de implantación de nuevas tecnologías y la modernización del proceso de producción, Valdeorras ha logrado que sus vinos estén entre los mejores de España y se exporten a los cinco continentes. Actualmente, la labor vinícola de Valdeorras y el complejo mundo a su alrededor se organiza a través del Consejo Regulador, órgano que rige los destinos de la Denominación de Origen, abarcando las superficies vitícolas de los municipios de A Rúa, A Veiga, Carballeda de Valdeorras, Larouco, O Barco, O Bolo, Petín, Rubiá y Vilamartín con casi 50 bodegas. Exceptuando A Veiga, todos disponen de explotaciones vitícolas que dotan al territorio de una singularidad única. Origen.
El origen de la variedad Godello se remonta a la época de la colonización romana y, según las últimas investigaciones, parece ser producto de la introgresión genética de material traído por los colonizadores romanos, sobre vides silvestres seleccionadas por las poblaciones primitivas del noroeste peninsular. La Godello, también denominada Agudello, Verdeja, Verdelho o Berdello Ojo de Gallo, es un uva autóctona de la ribera del río Sil. Es la variedad más importante de la D.O. Valdeorras y, además, está presente en otras localizaciones como Ribeira Sacra, Monterrey y Bierzo (Castilla y León). Actualmente se conservan viñedos antiguos en la D.O. Tierra del vino, en Villamor de los Escuderos (Zamora), donde se pueden observar cepas bicentenarias, plantadas aproximadamente en el año 1.800, de las que aún se obtienen maravillosos vinos. En el año 1885, el viticultor José Ramón Gayoso decidió plantar viñas de esta variedad en la región gallega de Valdeorras, en contraposición al resto de viticultores de la zona se decidía por variedades alóctonas, debido a la plaga de filoxera. Esta variedad ha adquirido importancia en los últimos años, y se ha hecho destacable por su mayor capacidad de envejecimiento en barrica de madera, produciendo vinos con matices complejos y elegantes.
Características.
Las cepas de godello son vigorosas y porte erguido, de elevada fertilidad, su desborre y maduración son precoces. Los racimos son pequeños, homogéneos en el tamaño de sus uvas, bastante compactos y con un pedúnculo de tamaño medio. Las uvas son pequeñas, pero de excelente calidad, sección circular y perfil elíptico, con hollejo verde amarillento, grueso y con mucha pruina. La pulpa, muy vascularizada y jugosa, no está pigmentada Sin sabores particulares, presenta un aroma intenso, peculiar y persistente, complejo y diverso con una madurez determinada. Recibe infinidad de nombres gouveio, godella, agodello, agodenho, agudanho, agudello, agudelo, berdello, cumbrao, guveio, guvejo, ojo de gallo, prieto picudo blanco, quveyo, trincadente, verdeiho, verdeleu, verdelho, verdelho branco, verdelho de madeira, verdelho do dao, verdelho du dao y verdello, muchas de ellas nomenclaturas en portugués y en gallego. Las cepas de uva godello es una variedad muy sensible a la humedad y al frío por lo que requiere un gran cuidado a lo largo de todo el año, por lo que se encuentra mejor adaptada al crecimiento en suelos secos. La botritis y el mildiu no le afectan en demasía, al contrario que el oídio, la excoriosis y diversos hongos vasculares.
Zonas de cultivo.
La Godello es una variedad que produce vinos blancos de carácter atlántico y su cultivo en D.O. Valdeorras se localiza sobre las laderas y llanos del río Sil, el Valle de Larouco y el Valle del Bibei, como destacadas sub-zonas reconocidas en la Denominación de Origen. También existen viñedos de godello en otras zonas de Galicia, como la Ribeira Sacra y Monterrey. En menor medida se cultiva en Castilla y León, sobre todo en la D.O. Bierzo, donde las plantaciones han aumentado tras un periodo de declive. En Portugal la principal región productora de vinos gouveio, godello en portugués, es Tras-os-Montes, en el noreste del país, donde suponen el 60% de las viñas existentes.
Vinos.
La uva Godello produce unos vinos meramente atlánticos, finos y delicados, con un gran cuerpo. Por suelen ser monovarietales con una acidez y un nivel de alcohol medio-elevado, gusto suavemente amielado, equilibrados y de excelente aromaticidad y un amargor elegante. Su perfil aromático suele ser muy complejo, menos definido que otras variedades blancas, aun así, suelen ser bastante distintivos los aromas cítricos y frutales, cargados de mineralidad, con toques herbáceos y un sutil aroma floral, como anises e hinojo. En muchos casos se elaboran con crianza sobre lías, donde se estabiliza su carácter y ganan en untuosidad y volumen. También son vinos que tienen una gran capacidad de mejora con un envejecimiento en barrica de roble, gracias a su acidez y buena estructura.
