Herederos del Marqués de Riscal: Brand.
Español [ ES ]Orígenes.
Fundada en 1858 en Elciego (Rioja Alavesa), Herederos del Marqués de Riscal es la bodega más antigua de Rioja junto a Marqués de Murrieta. En 1862 comercializó sus primeros vinos embotellados, cosechando rápidamente premios y reconocimientos. Desde entonces, ha mantenido una trayectoria de prestigio, siendo una de las bodegas españolas con mayor proyección internacional (sus vinos están presentes en más de 100 países). En 1972 extendió su radio de acción a la D.O. Rueda, elaborando sus primeros vinos blancos. 2006 marcó otro hito en Marqués de Riscal con la inauguración de la Ciudad del Vino: un espectacular complejo en torno a la vieja bodega familiar diseñado por el arquitecto Frank O. Gehry, con hotel, restaurantes de alta cocina y centro de Vinoterapia. La antigua bodega familiar ha sido remodelada y equipada con la última tecnología. Marqués de Riscal posee 500 hectáreas de viñedo en Rioja, 230 ha en Rueda y 198 ha en Toro y San Román de Hornija (Zamora).
Un referente en el sector.
Don Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, Marqués de Riscal, con viñas y bodega en Elciego y residente en Burdeos desde 1836, recibe el encargo de la Diputación Foral de Alava de instaurar las técnicas bordalesas en Rioja en 1858. Fue 1860, con ayuda de un enólogo francés, el proyecto Marqués de Riscal se convierte en realidad, dando a luz sus primeros vinos en 1862. En muy poco tiempo, todos los vinos de Marqués de Riscal comienzan a obtener sus primeros elogios y premios, siendo el primer vino no francés en obtener el Diploma de Honor de la Exposición de Burdeos en 1865. Tras más de cien años de historia, Herederos de Marqués de Riscal de Rioja, ya convertida en referente en su zona, deciden investigar en diversas regiones españolas productoras de vinos blancos de calidad y con ayuda de Emile Peynaud, enólogo francés, establece la primera bodega en Rueda dedicada a la elaboración de vinos blancos de Marqués de Riscal, jóvenes, frescos y afrutados, con una marcada personalidad. Fue en 1980, impulsor de la creación de la Denominación de Origen Rueda. En 1999, sale al mercado el primer vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León de Marqués de Riscal.
Trayectoria.
La historia de Herederos del Marqués de Riscal se sigue escribiendo en el siglo XXI con la construcción en el recinto de la propia bodega de un original edificio diseñado por el arquitecto Frank O. Gehry, uno de los más importantes arquitectos mundiales. Entre otros usos, este edificio alberga un restaurante de alta categoría, una zona de vinoterapia y un hotel. Hoy en día, esta gran empresa trabaja en tres zonas vinícolas de España. Las uvas utilizadas para hacer los vinos tintos de Bodega Marqués de Riscal en DOC Rioja crecen en 1.500 hectáreas, 500 propias y el resto de viñedos controlados por ellos. En Rueda, cuentan con el mayor viñedo en propiedad de la denominación, 205 hectáreas, pero trabajan con un total de 455 Ha., siendo 250 Ha. viñedo de agricultores de la zona controlado por sus técnicos. Y por último, los vinos de Herederos de Marqués de Riscal de Castilla y León salen de 198 hectáreas en los términos de Toro y San Román de Hornija. Su mayor tesoro lo albergan en el interior de la bodega madre, en Elciego, donde se encuentra La Catedral, una colección única, compuesta por botellas de todas las añadas producidas por la bodega, desde su primera cosecha del 1862 hasta día de hoy.

Esta uva, muy probablemente tiene su origen en Algaida, en el norte de África y su historia se remonta al reinado de Alfonso VI, Rey de León, entre los siglos XI y XII, cuando, tras la reconquista de Toledo, la zona del Duero fue repoblada por vascones, cántabros y mozárabes. Estos nuevos habitantes la plantaron en las zonas de Toro y Rueda. En el año 1980 se crea la Denominación de Origen Rueda, entre las provincias de Valladolid, Segovia y Ávila, que es la principal zona productora de vinos de uva verdejo.
Características.
Las variedad verdejo es el fruto de cepas semirrastreras, de porte postrado, vigor medio, poco fértiles y de producción elevada. De estas cepas se obtienen unas uvas de piel es fina, color verde amarillento y de tamaño entre pequeño y mediano, uniformes, esféricas, con hollejo de grosor medio y pepitas grandes. Posee una pulpa sin pigmento, jugosa pero insípida. Los racimos tienen un tamaño pequeño-mediano, son compactos y su pedúnculo es muy corto. Los viñedos de verdejo tienen una brotación media, maduración media-tardía y ciclo medio. Es una variedad con un amplio grado de adaptación por lo que tolera bien la sequía moderada y se adapta a suelos poco fértiles y pedregosos. Más cercana al Macabeo que al Chardonnay y Sauvignon Blanc en cuanto a rusticidad y productividad se refiere. Se le atribuyen problemas de corrimiento del racimo.
Zonas de cultivo.
La uva verdejo está muy extendida en toda la comunidad de Castilla y León, dentro de la cual, donde se encuentra la zona con mayor concentración de viñedos de variedad verdejo, la D.O. Rueda, cuya extensión supera las 13.500Ha plantadas. En la comunidad de Castilla y León también utilizan la variedad verdejo las D.O. de Cigales, León y Toro. Además de las zonas anteriormente citadas, existen viñedos de verdejo en Extremadura y Castilla-La Mancha y pequeñas cantidades plantadas en Asturias, Cataluña y Murcia. En la década de 2010 se empezó a cultivar en Barossa Valley, al sur de Australia.
Vinos.
Los vinos elaborados con variedad verdejo presentan colores que van de amarillo verdoso a pajizo, con tonos acerados y capa ligera media. La graduación alcohólica es moderada y su relación ácido tartárico/ácido málico es elevada. Poseen un buen extracto seco y resultan muy glicéricos, suaves, sabrosos y retrogusto amargo persistente. En nariz aportan aromas intensos, afrutados no notas herbáceas, flores blancas con tonos de almendra amarga, lo que les imprime una fase olfativa inconfundible. En el pasado se elaboraban vinos generosos a partir de uvas verdejo, haciendo una coupage con la variedad palomino, sin embargo, actualmente se tiende a hacer vinos jóvenes monovarietales de excelente calidad, así como otros, no menos buenos, con Sauvignon Blanc y Macabeo. Recientemente se están utilizando estas uvas para elaborar vinos espumosos. En la actualidad también se elaboran caldos de verdejo con crianza en barricas de roble lo que le imprime complejidad al vino.
