El cultivo de vides en el territorio de la actual región de Friuli Venezia Giulia ha sido el protagonista indiscutible desde la antigüedad. La historia de la vinificación de Friuli-Venezia Giulia ha sido fuertemente influenciada por la historia de esta zona, que fue parada importante a lo largo de la ruta de las especias mediterráneas, desde el Imperio Bizantino hasta el centro comercial de Venecia. En la época romana, el vino Pucino era muy apreciado en la corte imperial de Roma y, como narra Tito Livio, el Senado envió colonos a Aquileia para difundir el cultivo de la vid. Bajo el dominio lombardo de Teodorico primero, y sus sucesores, el cultivo de la vid disfrutó de un período de expansión también atestiguado por valiosos hallazgos arqueológicos conservados en el templo lombardo de Cividale del Friuli. Durante el medievo, la ribolla fue un obsequio de bienvenida para los tribunales europeos y, posteriormente, para los lugartenientes de la República de Venecia Serenissima, y para los del área austríaca en el pago de los condes de Gorizia, utilizando el vino como mercancía de intercambio y medio de pago de impuestos o deudas. Durante la Edad Media, los viajeros que pasaban por esta zona trajeron vides de Macedonia y Anatolia. Bajo el reinado de los Habsburgo, se introdujeron las variedades de uva francesa. Durante el siglo XIX, la región sirvió como un importante puerto mediterráneo para el Imperio austrohúngaro que compró una influencia teutónica en el área. Después de la epidemia de filoxera, la vinificación en la región de Friuli estuvo muy apagada y no se relanzó hasta la década de 1970. La popularidad internacional de Pinot grigio, en las décadas de los ochenta y los noventa, ayudó a cambiar la dinámica de la vinificación de Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Antes de este tiempo, los propietarios de viñedos vendían sus uvas a granel a cooperativas y bodegas que combinaban las uvas. Clima y geografía.
El área geográfica reconocida para la producción de vino IGT Venezia Giulia se extiende sobre el territorio de la región de Friuli Venezia Giulia, en una superficie de 7.856Ha, incluyendo las provincias de Pordenone, Udine, Gorizia y Trieste.
