Historia.
En la era prerromana, el Isonzo estaba habitado por los Eneti, "pueblo homérico" que emigraron del Mar Negro y tal vez ya cultivaban la vid importada por los griegos. La denominación de origen controlada "Isonzo" e "Isonzo del Friuli" fue aprobada por decreto del Presidente de la República el 30 de octubre de 1974, posteriormente modificada por decreto del Presidente de la República el 25 de marzo de 1988 y por decreto ministerial el 28 de febrero de 1995 cuando se modificó en "Friuli Isonzo" o "Isonzo del Friuli".
El clima y las vides.
El área DOC Friuli Isonzo tiene un microclima mediterráneo, con una radiación solar que permite cambios sensibles de temperatura, las cuales ayudan a la lenta maduración de la vid, dando uvas sólidas y equilibradas, ricas en sabores y aromas. Las viñas adecuadas para la producción del vino en cuestión son las que se cultivan tradicionalmente en el área de Isonzo. Las formas de capacitación, los diseños de plantación y los sistemas de poda son tales que buscan la disposición mejor y racional en la superficie de las vides; las plantas están estructuradas por formas agrícolas no expandidas, con alta densidad de tocones (3500- 4000 por hectárea) y una productividad promedio entre 60 y 90 quintales por hectárea. Las prácticas relacionadas con la producción de vinos son aquellas tradicionalmente consolidadas en el área para la vinificación en blanco y tinto de vinos tranquilos.
Los vinos.
La denominación Friuli Isonzo o Isonzo del Friuli DOC se refiere a diferentes tipos de vino blanco, tinto, rosado y espumoso. Todos los vinos tienen un contenido de acidez modesto; el color de los vinos blancos es generalmente amarillo pajizo intenso y los aromas son florales y afrutados. Los vinos tintos tienen un color que tiende hacia el rubí con reflejos púrpuras en vinos jóvenes. La pinot gris es una variedad de uva, de la que se tienen noticias desde la Edad Media en la región de Borgoña, donde probablemente se la llamaba fromenteau. Llegó a Suiza desde Borgoña, junto a la pinot noir, a principios del siglo XIV. Según se cree, esta variedad era la favorita del Emperador Carlos IV de Luxemburgo, quien envió esquejes de esta vid, llevados por los monjes cistercienses, hasta Hungría. Los religiosos crearon viñedos de pinot gris en las laderas de Badacsony, a orillas del lago Balatón, en 1375. Poco después, la vid fue llamada szürkebarát, que significa "monje gris". En 1711, un comerciante alemán, de nombre Johann Seger Ruland, descubrió una uva creciendo silvestre en los campos del Palatinado. El subsiguiente vino que produjo fue conocido como ruländer y, posteriormente, se descubrió que esta vid era la pinot gris. Hasta los siglos XVIII y XIX, la uva era popular en Borgoña y en Champaña, pero las malas cosechas en la zona hicieron que decayera. En Alemania ocurrió algo similar, pero los viticultores de principios del siglo XX fueron capaces de desarrollar clones que producían cosechas más consistentes y fiables.
Características.
La variedad Pinot Gris es una uva originaria de Borgoña donde le llaman Pinot Beurots. Investigadores de la Universidad de California en Davis, han determinado que la pinot gris tiene un perfil de ADN similar a la pinot noir y que la diferencia de color deriva de una mutación genética que ocurrió hace siglos. Las hojas y las cepas de ambas vides son tan similares que la diferencia de color es lo único que permite diferenciarlas. Las cepas de pinot gris son de vigor medio bajo, de porte erecto, desborre y maduración semitardíos a tardios. Su producción es escasa. Los racimos son pequeños, compactos, homogéneos, cilíndricos, alados, con ramificación claramente diferenciada y muchas veces largamente pedunculada. Las bayas del pinot gris son pequeñas de sección circular y perfil ligeramente elíptico. Su hollejo es grueso de color gris-rosado-marrón, con mucha pruina. La pulpa es compacta, jugosa y muy aromática. Es una viña que resiste bien el frío, no se ve muy afectada por las heladas, tanto las de invierno como las de primavera. Resiste muy poco la caliza activa y la sequía. Es muy sensible a la botritis ya la podredumbre gris y ácida. Es sensible black-rot, al desecado del raquis, a los ácaros, cicadélidos y a la polilla del racimo, sin embargo, es poco sensible a la excoriosis.
Zonas de cultivo.
La variedad Pinot Gris se asocia generalmente a las regiones vitícolas de Alsacia (Francia) y Oregon (Estados Unidos). Pero su cultivo se ha extendido a muchas otras zonas de todo el mundo, siendo también cultivada en Borgoña, California, Alemania, Italia, Australia, Nueva Zelanda, Argentina, Austria, Canadá, Chile, Hungría, Italia, Moldavia, Rumania, Sudáfrica, Eslovenia, Suiza y Ucrania.
Vinos.
Los vinos hechos de pinot gris varian mucho dependiendo de la región y de su estilo de vinificación, pudiendo encontrar desde vinos livianos a vinos con mucho cuerpo. Los vinos de pinot gris de Alsacia tienen un cuerpo de medio a completo y puede envejecer bien. El vino alemán tiene más cuerpo y tiene un balance leve entre acidez y dulzor. En Oregón, los vinos tienen un cuerpo medio, cuentan con un color cobrizo rosado y aromas a pera, manzana y/o melón.
