Historia.
El área geográfica que comprende la actual Denominación de Origen Costers del Segre lleva siglos elaborando vinos, pero su ubicación interior y alejado del mar, dificultaban su inclusión en las vías de comercialización, pero obteniendo unos vinos con elementos propios y característicos. Innovaciones en las variedades de uva y en los métodos de producción, fue el primer lugar de Cataluña en introducir las variedades cabernet sauvignon, merlot y chardonnay, junto a las variedades autóctonas, y se adoptaron las técnicas californianas de vinificación. Durante el año 1983: Jaume Siurana, director del Incavi, y Manuel Raventós Artes, director general de Codorniu y de la Bodega Raimat, consideraron que, la excelente calidad vitivinícola de las comarcas ilerdenses precisaba de un consejo regulador, para velar por su tradición vitivinícola y garantizar la excelente calidad de los vinos producidos y liderar la promoción de sus vinos, aprovechando el gran éxito que ya tenían los vinos de Raimat, constituyéndose como D.O. en mayo de 1986 y siendo ratificada dos años después.
Geografía, geología y clima.
Costers del Segre es una región vitivinícola española, situada en la provincia de Lérida, que se ha constituido en denominación de origen. La Denominación de Origen Costers del Segre es un mosaico formado por siete territorios, repartidos a lo largo de toda la cuenca del río Segre y el Pirineo leridano, con el objetivo de agrupar y dotar de entidad propia la vitivinicultura de la provincia de Lérida. Abarca sietes subzonas de producción: Segriá, Raimat, Artesa de Segre, Urgell, Pallars, Vall de Riucorb y Garrigues. Cada una de estas regiones tiene condiciones geográficas y climáticas diversas, alternando zonas de montaña con otras de llanura, cuyo nexo de unión es la cuenca media del río Segre, entre el Pirineo y el Ebro, y el clima interior y seco, alejado de la influencia del mar y con muchas horas de sol, pocas lluvias, pero de elevada humedad debido a las numerosas nieblas invernales. En general, goza de clima continental, con contrastes térmicos, alta insolación y pluviosidad escasa. Las altitudes varían entre los 200 y los 1.100 metros de altitud. Edafológicamente hablando, nos encontramos con terrenos calcáreos cubiertos parcialmente de arena, con una gran uniformidad en toda la denominación. La temperatura media anual es de 14 °C a 15 °C, siendo frecuentes heladas en invierno y temperaturas de hasta 35 °C en verano.
Los vinos.
Los vinos con el sello D.O. Costers del Segre pueden ser tanto blancos como rosados, tintos o espumosos, así como vinos de aguja y vinos de licor. Dependiendo del grado de envejecimiento, los vinos elaborados se clasifican en jóvenes, crianza, reserva y gran reserva. En el conjunto de esta Denominación de Origen las variedades blancas predominantes son las tradicionales, Macabeo y Parellada. Esto hace que los blancos de la región de Costers del Segre sean vinos de perfil más clásico, es decir, ligeros, afrutados y acidulados. La exitosa aclimatación del Chardonnay a la región ha abierto la puerta a vinos de características más modernas, ya sean vinos jóvenes o fermentados en barrica de roble, porque presentan una mayor estructura y se hace más presente su carácter varietal. Entre las variedades tintas predominan el Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah y Pinot Noir, pero también se cultivan las variedades tradicionales, sobretodo el Tempranillo, la Garnacha y el Trepat. Dentro de los matices lógicos que el suelo de cada territorio imprime en sus uvas, los tintos de la DO Costers del Segre se caracterizan porque tienen un aroma potente y un gusto equilibrado, al mismo tiempo que ofrecen una buena expresión tánica y en boca resultan sabrosos, amplios y estructurados.

Origen.
La variedad macabeo, también muy conocida como viura, es una variedad de uva blanca utilizada en la elaboración de vino. Existe controversia al origen de la uva macabeo, en parte debido a la tardía detección de la sinonimia entre viura y macabeo. Hay autores que sitúan su origen en Asia Menor, aunque la primera cita de macabeo la ubica en los Pirineos orientales franceses, en contraposición a otras opiniones que colocan su origen en la región de Aragón. Por tanto, desde el punto de vista vitivinícola, se desconoce a ciencia cierta su origen, pero se puede asegurar, sin temor a equivocarse, que los primeros vinos de uva macabeo se elaboraron en un área situado entre el sureste de Francia y el noreste de España.
Características.
Las viña macabeo es una variedad rústica que se adapta con facilidad a distintos tipos de suelos, aunque se desaconseja para lugares frescos y húmedos o demasiado secos, ya que tiene facilidad para el desecamiento y a la senescencia y caída precoz de las hojas. Es una uva formada en racimos grandes, compactos y con pedúnculo corto, con forma cónica larga, rodeados de hojas grandes formadas por cinco lóbulos con un seno peciolar poco abierto o incluso cerrado. Las uvas son de color amarillo dorado, de un tamaño mediano, esféricas y uniformes y que, en su estrujado, producen un hollejo grueso. Es una variedad con cepas bastante vigorosas, de porte erguido y de alto rendimiento productivo, tanto por hectáreas como en mosto. Su fertilidad es alta, así como sus rendimientos. Esta variedad es muy sensible a las polillas y a la botrytis cinerea o podredumbre gris. Su sensibilidad al oídio y la necrosis bacteriana es media alta, así como a los ácaros. Por el contrario, no es demasiado sensible al mildiu y al corrimiento de racimo. Es una uva de brotación relativamente tardía, así como su maduración mientras su desborre es temprano, lo que la hace sensible a las heladas.
Zonas de cultivo.
Las regiones que producen vino blanco a partir de esta uva son principalmente La Rioja y Penedés, siendo muy usada para la elaboración de cava en Cataluña, aunque también se elaboran vinos blancos con uva macabeo en Aragón, Castilla la Mancha, Valencia y Extremadura. En Francia es habitual en la región de Languedoc-Rosellón. Es la variedad más utilizada para los vinos de Rioja, los espumosos de Rueda y muy principal en la elaboración del cava.
Vinos.
La variedad Macabeo es muy polivalente, apta para la fermentación en barrica y, según las condiciones de cultivo, permite obtener distintos tipos de vinos blancos secos, espumosos o incluso vinos dulces naturales. Son vinos ligeros y agradables, equilibrados en acidez y azúcar y de color pálido. En nariz da lugar a vinos con aromas florales y frutales, como la manzana, de intensidad media alta. En boca produce vinos ligeramente astringentes que, cuando han sido vendimiados tardíamente y son envejecidos en madera, recuerdan a la miel y frutos secos. También son utilizados en el coupage de los tintos jóvenes o de crianza, imprimiendo acidez al conjunto, sobre todo cuando se ha hecho una vendimia precoz en la zona centro, o cuando el cultivo es en climas frescos. El grado alcohólico de estos vinos ronda 13,6º con acidez media de 5,3.

Origen.
La variedad Chardonnay es el fruto de una viña originaria de la región francesa de Borgoña, donde se localiza un pueblo del mismo nombre. Dentro de las uvas blancas, es la más extendida y popular en todo el mundo, por lo que, para mucho público, Chardonnay es sinónimo de vino blanco. Es una uva muy equilibrada en fruta, acidez y textura. Se puede considerar que marida con todo, desde comidas potentes hasta las más suaves, desde platos picantes y quesos fuertes, hasta pescados y aves. Además de los vinos blancos de mesa, es la uva con la que se elaboran la mayor parte de los champanes.
Características.
Si fuera una persona, Chardonnay sería un diplomático por su facilidad de maridaje, diversidad en sabores y facilidad de consumo. Como la uva en sí no tiene un sabor concreto, extrae su aroma del terruño donde se cultiva y obtiene sabores muy diversos, que pueden ser desde vinos muy limpios y sabrosos hasta otros ricos en toques de roble y mantequilla. Su racimo es de tamaño más bien pequeño, bastante compacto y con pedúnculo muy característico y de tamaño muy reducido. Las uvas en sí son pequeñas, uniformes y muy esféricas. Su piel es amarillento-verdosa cuando madura, hollejo de grosor considerable y una pulpa poco o nada pigmentada, textura blanda, muy jugosa y con aroma afrutado. La cepa es precoz en su brote, vigorosa, resistente y muy versátil por adaptarse a terruños y climas muy diversos, con la única condición de que no sean excesivamente húmedos. Es muy fértil, aunque con rendimientos bajos, aunque de una calidad bastante elevada. Esta viña se ve afectada por suelos con carencia de magnesio y precisa de niveles altos de fósforo y nitrógeno. Es una variedad de uva muy sensible a la carencia de magnesio y muy afectado por el secado fisiológico del raspón. En cuanto a sus hándicaps, es sensible al oídio, a la flavescencia dorada, al mildiu y a la podredumbre gris, así como a la polilla y a los cicadélidos y especialmente a los ácaros. Por otra parte, los hongos de la madera no le afectan en exceso y resiste perfectamente a la clorosis. Debido a su desborre precoz y maduración temprana es una viña que no gusta de los fríos primaverales, dando unos rebrotes de muy baja fertilidad, no obstante, aguanta bien los inviernos crudos y es muy resistente a los vientos fuertes.
Zonas de cultivo.
Podemos encontrar esta variedad de uva prácticamente en cualquier área vitivinícola pues está extendida mundialmente. Es muy común en Francia, España e Italia, aunque también se cultiva en Portugal, Estados Unidos, Australia, nueva Zelanda, en los países de América del sur y en África del Sur. Se calcula que hay en torno a 160,000Ha de uva chardonnay plantadas, de las cuales una tercera parte está en Francia. Además de su nombre genérico, también es conocida como Franciacorta en Italia, Chardoney y Pino Shardone en Bulgaria, Feinburgunder y Morillon en Austria y Pinot Chardonnay en Chipre.
Vinos.
Sus características pueden variar desde vinos ricos, gruesos y espesos, adecuados para envejecer en botella, a vinos más ligeros y frescos hechos sin madera y destinados a ser bebidos jóvenes. Es una de las variedades con que se elaboran el Champagne. Los vinos chardonnay presentan en su fase visual una capa variable entre pajiza muy pálido y un amarillo casi dorado, con reflejos verdosos. En nariz se observan los aromas característicos que son manzana verde, limón, pomelo, pera, acacia, frutas tropicales como mango, piña, banana, melón o ananá, algo de especias o caramelo. Cuando envejecen en barrica despiertan aromas a vainilla, miel y manteca. Su boca es elegante, larga, sin demasiada acidez, pero con una gama de sabores que va desde manzanas a cítricos, melón, peras, miel, cera, caramelo, dulce de leche y minerales entre los más destacados. Como consejo, es preferible adquirir vinos de esta variedad que se elaboren en regiones vinícolas de clima frío.
