Geografía.

Los viñedos de la Denominación de origen Méntrida se encuentran situados al norte de la provincia de Toledo, limitando con las provincias de Ávila y de Madrid, y se extienden al pie de la impresionante Sierra de Gredos en su parte oriental. Esta zona está atravesada por el curso bajo del río Alberche y en ella se ubican poblaciones ligadas al vino y a la historia como Almorox, Escalona, Maqueda, Fuensalida, Camarena, Casarrubios del Monte y la propia Méntrida. Cuenta con algunas de las mejores garnachas de España, viñas, en muchos casos, centenarias y marcadas por la orografía de la zona y por la presencia del sol y las distintas alturas de entre 400 y 800 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Muchas de las viñas de garnacha de la DO Méntrida están plantadas en laderas con bajos rendimientos, pero de alta calidad. El buen saber hacer de los bodegueros instalados en Méntrida, sin lugar a duda, está consiguiendo que sus garnachas estén permitiendo la elaboración de vinos de gran calidad.

Historia.

La Denominación de Origen Méntrida, aprobada como tal en 1976, está integrada por 26 bodegas y cooperativas del noreste de Toledo, fue concebida durante el medievo a determinados señoríos jurisdiccionales que se encargaron de los gobiernos y de llevar a cabo una rápida repoblación. La comarca que hoy ampara los vinos de la DO Méntrida, da sus primeros pasos durante la Edad Media, ya que determinados señoríos jurisdiccionales se encargaron de los gobiernos y de llevar a cabo una rápida repoblación. Prueba de ello son las referencias a viñedos que datan del siglo XII. El cultivo del vino fue prosperando hasta alcanzar su esplendor en el Madrid de los Austrias en la que estos vinos fueron muy apreciados. Desde el nacimiento de la DO se ha pasado por varias etapas, y hoy en día se enfrenta a nuevos mercados y nuevos retos.

El clima.

El clima de la Denominación de origen Méntrida es extremadamente continental, con inviernos largos y fríos, con grandes contrastes entre el día y la noche y algo atemperados por encontrarse protegida de los vientos fríos del norte y del oeste por la barrera montañosa de Gredos. Los veranos son calurosos, suaves y con precipitaciones muy escasas. Estas condiciones climatológicas son idóneas para el cultivo de la vid y favorecen la aplicación de las técnicas más naturales, ecológicas y biodinámicas en la elaboración de los vinos tanto tintos como blancos. En cuanto al terreno, el suelo es suavemente ondulado y está formado por sustratos arenosos de origen granítico, ácidos y con muy poca cal, lo que favorece al crecimiento de la vid y la maduración de la uva al podar los racimos en vaso para protegerlos del sol.

Las uvas y los vinos.

La inmensa mayoría de las vides pertenece a la variedad tinta Garnacha. Son vides muy viejas de baja producción. Dentro de las variedades tintas podemos encontrar Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Graciano, Merlot, Syrah y Petit Verdot. También se usan las uvas blancas Albillo, Chardonay, Moscatel de Grano Menudo, Sauvignon Blanc y Viura. Los tipos de vino que se elaboran en esta DO serán tintos en su gran mayoría siendo cálidos, densos y carnosos, blancos y rosados. Su apuesta por el vino de calidad es cada vez más clara, antaño se dedicaban a grandes producciones y ventas de vino a granel. En cuanto a los términos tradicionales que se pueden utilizar en la DO Méntrida, hablaremos de: Roble, Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva, Añejo, Noble, Rancio, Superior y Viejo. Para utilizar la mención de tinto Roble el envejecimiento se realiza durante al menos 2 meses en barrica de roble cuya capacidad no será inferior a 200 litros ni superior a 500 litros. Los crianzas envejecen durante veinticuatro meses, de los que un mínimo de seis han de permanecer en barricas de roble, para los blancos de crianza se reduce a dieciocho meses, con un mínimo de seis en madera. Los vinos de reserva requieren de un envejecimiento de treinta y seis meses, de los que al menos doce habrán permanecido en barricas de madera de roble y en botella el resto. Los grandes reserva necesitan un envejecimiento de sesenta meses, de los que al menos dieciocho habrán permanecido en barricas de madera de roble y en botella el resto de dicho periodo. No se permite utilizar barricas de más de trescientos treinta litros excepto para los robles que podrá llegar a los quinientos litros. Los vinos se caracterizan por su elevada graduación alcohólica y alto extracto seco, siendo ricos en tanino y materias colorantes, de aroma suave y característico de la variedad y al paladar son carnosos, con cuerpo, cálidos y suaves.
